The major e-mobility trends summary

This is a (much) shorter version of an eBook published by CCV: 26 powerful e-mobility trends. For more detailed insights, download it today.

There is a positive outlook for electric vehicles over the next few years, with predictions that global sales will climb greatly. This is supported by McKinsey research, which claims over 4.5 million units will be sold in 2020 (or equivalent to 5% of vehicles in the world!). The drive to push forward with e-mobility is to reduce environmental impact, but convenience and efficiency are important for mass market adoption.

What does this electric revolution mean in this age of modern transit? You will learn more about how this trend is impacting consumers’ lives by analyzing the top trends in our ebook.

 Why is e-mobility popular?

Environmental concern is the primary motivator for over half of current EV users in Europe. But continued support from the government, along with higher fuel taxes and changing preference towards eco-friendly options, deliver the growth for e-mobility, too. More vehicle manufacturers have hopped on the electric vehicle bandwagon, and this has made a lasting impact.

However, obstacles still do exist. Lagging infrastructure and limited customer awareness are challenges that must be addressed in order to accelerate electric vehicle sales.

Charging technology

Charging is a key issue amongst the biggest e-mobility trends. The number of EVs has outpaced charging infrastructure. Aside from the accessibility of charging stations, charging technologies must cope with the growing demand for EVs. Speedy charging is one of those that users are demanding for, and mainstream wireless may be on the horizon. Convenience is at the core of this, and it remains to be seen how stakeholders will collaborate to standardize global charging infrastructure - if indeed they do at all.

Payments in e-mobility

As the demand for charging stations grows, convenient payment solutions must be offered. When implementing EV payment systems on charging stations, there are three mandatory requirements: convenience, security, and universality (for ad-hoc customers). These requirements should apply when developing payment solutions for EV charging, regardless of the technology involved.

Improvements in design

Developing electric vehicles for the masses is a huge challenge. Building excellent functionality and cool design features is critical, but the truest measure of e-mobility success is not in innovation itself. Vehicles must meet safety standards, use space efficiently, and they must be convenient and reliable. We should celebrate the brilliant new designs, whilst retaining the focus on making e-mobility work.

Boost battery performance

One of the most instrumental factors for success of the EV industry is in the incorporation of high-performance batteries. While falling battery prices is a good thing, reliability and accessibility will still play a factor. Expect battery technology to continually improve as the EV movement pushes forward.

Summary

The e-mobility market is just getting started. There are undeniable challenges that must be faced, but these are not insurmountable. Fostering a culture of collaboration, amidst a competitive environment, will bring the long-term benefits of e-mobility to the mass market. This is truly an exciting time in the world of mobility, and we’re ready to provide the innovative payment solutions that the industry needs.
