Making the Most of the Q4 Conference Blitz

September is here and the COMO (certainty of missing out) has already begun!

There are dozens of big events happening in October, Manufacturing Month. In CT, we have the CBIA Manufacturing Summit on October 2nd and the ManufactureCT Annual Celebration on October 9th.

Industry tradeshows are happening across the country and the singular Women in Manufacturing Summit is in Boston, October 6-9.

Choose wisely.

Prioritize the events and their importance to you and your organization, and follow these three tips to maximize your learning experience & manage your energy:

Tip #1: Begin with the Group Debrief in Mind

Whether you're attending a conference or a single day event, as a single or with a team, plan to share your takeaways in advance!

1) Pick a date and time. Calendar a post-event virtual meet-up BEFORE you go to conference and share it with others. Invite them to keep business cards & new connections, and share why those were meaningful. Avoid "crickets" and/or chaos by choosing a moderator for the call.

2) Be Strategic: Look at the conference schedule and assign sessions, if you have a group. Split up and gather information, rather than having whole groups go to the same session. Focus on lessons learned, people you met, and actionable ideas or behaviors that you pull from the conference workshops. If you're a solo attendee, consider reaching out at the event and inviting others to share findings with you - what a great networking opener!

Tip #2: Follow Your Feet (aka The Law of Two Feet)

There's no rule that says you have to stay in a session that's not of interest to you, even if you're in the front row!

Brilliantly simple, the Law of Two Feet says that any time you're in a meeting where you're not contributing nor finding/adding value--you are encouraged to use your two feet and find a place where you can. My addendum: If your brain is full and you need to go for a walk, do that!

Tip#3: Bring Snacks

Energy management is key at big, high stimulation conferences. Be mindful of hydration, caffeination, and food intake to maximize your day(s) and sustain your body. While many conferences offer snacks and drinks throughout the day, it's always easiest to bring one or two food items (granola bars, etc.) that'll help you (and possibly others) to stay focused and alert.

Final Note: 'Tis the season to be learning and connecting! If you don't have a business card, you can use your LinkedIn QR Code. Simply click on the search button on your LI phone app and you'll see the QR code symbol in the upper right corner. Click on that and you now have a business card. You can screenshot it and keep it handy.

Between now and the third week of November, everyone is competing for your attention and energy. How will you choose? Where will you spend your money, time, resources, and attention? Be intentional about how you recapture the value of what's learned BEFORE you slip into the Thanksgiving to Christmas vortex of holiday gatherings for teams and associations.
