How did you get started in the world of video creation? What inspired you to post your first video?

I first started because I deeply struggled with navigating my own career as a woman of color in tech. I didn’t have the network or the know-how. It took years of trial by fire to get to where I am today, and I felt the path was unnecessarily gatekept. I wanted to build a public platform and share my tactical advice on how I navigated my career to help others get there faster.

How do you determine what topics you focus on to help your followers stay current on professional topics?

It’s a mix of what I’m currently going through and the reactions I get in the comments. I actually don’t think my content is as “current” as it can be. It’s far more personal from the challenges or milestones I’m going through in my life, and I trust that the content will reach the right people who resonate with the topics I share.

How do you approach videos to make professional topics more approachable and fun for your followers to watch?

I try to frame everything in the way that I’d like to hear it. On video, we don’t get much time - only 1 min for short form or 10-15 min on long form. That’s remarkably shorter than any 1:1 or meeting we get in the corporate world. Every sentence, every phrase counts to keep the viewer engaged.

Your videos have such a distinctive style, do would-be creators need to invest in lots of equipment to get started in video creation?

I really don’t think so. Using your smartphone and good natural lighting is truly all you need. I personally just enjoy upleveling my production, but it’s completely unnecessary for people getting started. I do think getting a good mic (like the DJI and Rode mics) can help a lot! Adding captions also helps quite a bit.

What advice would you give to someone posting their first video on LinkedIn?

The biggest hesitation I see are people thinking they have to have the perfect video or piece of content to post. I think we just have to accept that your first posts won’t be good, but we can trust that we will all get there someday if we keep trying.

We don’t have to be great to start, but we have to start to be great.
