DEEP-SEA LITERACY
ISA Cartoon to educate children to the wonders of the Deep translated into Swahili and Tongan!
Progressing with its deep-sea literacy efforts, ISA has developed a dedicated educational tool to enable children aged 4-12 to learn about the wonders of the deep sea.
This short activity entitled “Discover the seabed with Olivia” is accessible everywhere in the world, with only a cell phone or a tablet and allows, through coloring pages featuring a female deep-sea scientist, Dr. Olivia, who takes us onboard her submarine as she explores the deep sea, to address complex issues pertaining to the management of 54 per cent of the world’s ocean seabed and the role of ISA in that respect. The objective is to sensitize children on the important role that science plays in support of the precautionary approach and responsible management of the global commons and the role that women and girls could play in this endeavour.
The Wakatoon app brings the colored drawings to life in a two-minute video available in the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) as well as Swahili and Tongan.
