Following my recent nomination for Entrepreneur of the Year with the EOY scheme, I thought about how prevalent the entrepreneur spirit is in every industry, not just in tech. The team recently developed an article about just this topic, so I thought it a perfect time to share.

Why Entrepreneurship Is Key In All Markets

It's prevalent these days to describe starting a business as 'entrepreneurship'. But even in mid-18th century France where the term was first used, it suggested something more specific. Classical economists had previously believed that successful businesses were founded on perfect knowledge and never had the potential to fail.

The concept of the entrepreneur recognized for the first time the elements of risk-taking and belief that have been fundamental to so many business success stories. Therein lies the clue to what entrepreneurship is all about.

It involves a far-sighted vision of challenges, innovation, and change. A business owner will have similar practical objectives, but making a difference is as important as making money to a true entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurship is about building on a dream, being the architect of your own life and improving the lives of others. An entrepreneur's ideas and philosophy are as valuable as their products and services. Furthermore, one of the best-kept secrets of entrepreneurship is that you don't have to be the boss to be one.

In any market, entrepreneurs play a crucial role. Every branch of industry and commerce has its custom and practice, but it also has rules just begging to be broken. The vision and leadership of the entrepreneurs turn a company into success and transform the entire industry. You can spot an entrepreneur by the long line of business owners following their footsteps. That's not to say that success is inevitable - failure is often part of the growth process.

As Samuel Beckett said: 'Try again. Fail again. Fail better.' Failure is merely a step on the road to success. It is belief in the vision that sustains the enterprise, with a single-mindedness that refuses to abandon the end-point and accept defeat. Risk-taking and innovation are two sides of the same coin, which is the currency of entrepreneurship. True revolutions in business can happen organically, but you will usually find highly driven visionaries playing a pivotal role.
