Mark Burnett Exits MGM

Eight years after he started his relationship with the studio, Mark Burnett, Chairman of MGM’s Worldwide Television Group, is exiting. This comes in the wake of MGM’s $8.5B acquisition last year by Amazon. Last week, Deadline revealed that the man behind The Apprentice was weighing his options as the integration of MGM into the tech giant gains pace.

Burnett will return to “independently creating and innovating,” but will also continue to oversee his legacy series, which include Survivor, Shark Tank and The Voice.

It’s understood that Burnett’s current contract was up at the end of the year and there have been rumors that he’s started talking to others about setting up a new production company.

SAG-AFTRA Begins Wages & Working Conditions Process For Upcoming Contract Talks

SAG-AFTRA on Monday began the wages and working conditions process to help determine its bargaining positions for the upcoming film and TV contract negotiations. The union has said that the contract talks are set to begin in the spring and that “wage rate increases and the streaming residuals structure” will be among the issues to be bargained.

Iger Says Disney Hiring Freeze Still On

During a town hall at Disney’s Burbank HQ timed to his official return, self-described “boomerang CEO” Bob Iger said that the hiring freeze his predecessor Bob Chapek announced on November 11 remains in place. Iger also told staffers that longstanding rumors of a merger or deal with Apple were “pure speculation” and that there are no big-ticket acquisitions on the horizon anytime soon.
