Markets Are (Almost) Like the Real World
Before we get to the main event, I recently was on Stacy Havener 's podcast Billion Dollar Backstory Podcast .
We had a blast talking about EVERYTHING... Lots of personal stuff here too
You can listen to my interview with Stacy here on Apple Podcast and Spotify.
Onto the main stuff...
"Investment types" love JARGON, don't they?
That's fine.
You can't change (most) people.
But there is so much to learn from:
- DROPPING THE JARGON
- letting go of investing as an abstract thing
- translating it back to some version of the REAL WORLD.
If you're with me, here are some thoughts for you...
I hope you like analogies 😊
(I love L-U-V them).
Risk and Return.
Can you think of two more abstract concepts?
Take money...
(Abstract!)
Make it move around, up and down...
(Very abstract!!)
Ask people how they're supposed to think about it.
→ Good luck with that!
How about ENTERPRISE and RESILIENCE instead?
Enterprise is about leaning into opportunities over time.
→ How entrepreneurial do you feel?
Resilience is about preparing for inevitable challenges.
→ How do you prepared do you feel?
Quickly you realize you can't be "100% this" or "100% that"...
It's too easy to fail (quickly or slowly) if you live in a this-or-that world.
Maybe it's not about "picking your poison"...
→ Maybe it's about mixing those two potions just so for you.

Stocks, Bonds, and Every Other Asset.
I can teach you what these different assets are.
And it's worth learning.
But maybe it's worth thinking about assets differently too.
Your portfolio's biggest asset may be its ability to lean into different ACTIVITIES based on what's going on in the world.
Think of it as a SimCity type of thing...
(Or Roblox if you're of a different generation).
Imagine you're developing an environment, an ECOSYSTEM, that can thrive throughout the seasons (and some natural disasters too).
What would your diverse ecosystem include?
My weird little imaginary town might include:
- A Farm (so you can harvest regular crops and feed your town folks)
- A Trading Depot (or maybe it's a General Store, where buying and selling is a service)
- A Junkyard (to store today's trash, in case it eventually becomes someone else's treasure)
- A Conservancy (where you keep the assets your little town will be grateful to have generations from now).
- And a Bank (to facilitate commerce over time).
To me, that makes sense:
You want to eat
You want to trade
You want to store discarded gems
You want to think about what this place is going to look like decades from now.
And you want a place to house cash because it's better to "be the bank" than to beg a bank...
What does your investment ecosystem look like today?
Like I said, lots of analogies.
But sometimes there is a lot to learn from taking the slightly longer way around the block.
Be well and take care, 👋
Jonathan
