So whether you're a student just starting out or a seasoned professional looking to get involved, this edition has something for you!

It's been a busy and exciting week, culminating with the announcement of the Vieth Institute for Real Estate Leadership. This new and innovative program will coalesce all the best things we've been doing with the Marquette University Vieth Institute for Real Estate Leadership and meld them with the opportunities and benefits of the traditions of the law and engineering disciplines. This announcement has been months in the making and a very exciting evolution of all the hard work that has gone into growing the commercial real estate program at Marquette University .

Surging Student Interest in CRE Careers

As a commercial real estate attorney and Chair of the Marquette University Real Estate program's Advisory Board, I've witnessed firsthand the surge in student interest in CRE careers. This national trend is reflected in recent data: the number of graduates with real estate bachelor's degrees has skyrocketed by a phenomenal 13% annually from 2015-2020, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. This growth significantly outpaces the national average for both bachelor's and master's degrees in all business fields.

This data underscores the increasing popularity of CRE careers and reinforces the need for educational programs that equip graduates with the skills and experience to succeed in this dynamic field.

Bridging the Gap: Hands-on Learning for Real-World Success

The fast-paced world of CRE demands more than theory. It demands action. That's why I championed the need for education that goes beyond the classroom in my recent NAIOP Development Magazine article, "Unlocking the Potential of Commercial Real Estate at the University Level". Imagine a student mastering real estate valuation but then struggling to analyze complex deals upon entering the workforce.

Thankfully, several universities are addressing this gap with innovative programs. A prime example is the newly announced Marquette University 's Vieth Institute for Real Estate Leadership. The vision goes beyond the typical real estate curriculum, fostering an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates expertise from Business, Engineering, and Law. However, their true distinction lies in their dedication to applied learning.

As many of you know I am heavily involved at Marquette and during a recent visit, I was struck by the palpable energy and practical skills the students were acquiring not just in the classroom but in applied learning opportunities. Students weren't simply memorizing – they were actively engaged in case studies, real estate competitions, and even managing a real $2 million investment fund through the Real Estate Asset Program (REAP). This kind of practical experience is invaluable. Graduates with a degree and a portfolio showcasing their critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to navigate real-world complexities are highly sought-after by employers.

Calling All Future CRE Stars!

If you're a student with a burning passion for shaping the future of our cities and communities, the Vieth Institute is your launchpad to success. Forget about traditional programs that leave graduates feeling unprepared. The Vieth Institute offers a powerful combination: a rock-solid theoretical foundation coupled with invaluable practical learning opportunities. Imagine graduating with the skills and experience to make a real impact from day one, tackling complex deals and confidently navigating the dynamic world of CRE. This is your chance to stand out from the crowd and become a true leader in the field.

Seasoned Professionals: Your Expertise is Invaluable

The fire that ignited your passion for CRE likely still burns bright. The industry craves your experience and knowledge! Consider becoming a mentor, sharing your wisdom with future leaders. Collaborate with universities on research projects, or volunteer at industry events. Your guidance can make a world of difference in shaping the next generation of CRE professionals. By giving back, you'll not only help others, but also contribute to a brighter future for the entire industry.

Embrace Innovation, Cultivate a Brighter Future

By supporting innovative educational approaches like the Vieth Institute, we can cultivate a future brimming with talent and fresh ideas. A well-equipped workforce benefits everyone – from students launching their careers to seasoned professionals seeking continued industry success. Let's work together to push the boundaries and elevate the CRE industry to new heights!
