Mastering the Skills to Lead During Uncertain Times
In today’s business climate, organizations are operating in volatile and uncertain times, concerning expectations and the workforce. Fred Luthans wrote that the workplace is becoming a place where survival, let alone success necessitates a higher than average performance (Luthans & Youssef, 2003), which continues to be relevant in our current business landscape.
Organizations have become more diverse and employ global workforces. Leaders are not only managing the demands of the job but also leading teams with cultural differences. Studies have found that there is a difference in leadership styles based on cultural groups and suggests that perceptions of leadership are different depending on a person's cultural background (Jogulu, 2010). Organizations are looking to their leaders to cultivate environments that allow employees to flourish, thereby enhancing the employee experience.
This VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) environment that we now must lead in has changed the face of business, possibly forever.
So, what does this all mean for leaders?
· Successful leaders must be willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn as noted by author Alvin Toffler.
· VUCA events are not minor ripples but large disruptions in the way the world operates
· Developing hope, optimism resilience, and efficacy are essential to evolving during uncertain times.
· Workers need strong leaders more than any other time.
· Positive approaches to leadership have been empirically proven to get better results.
· Leaders must bridge the gap between fear and possibility to help their teams grow.
In these times, leaders are having to step up and lead in an environment that is not only unfamiliar but uncomfortable to most. This however does not mean it is impossible to succeed.
What can leaders do to managing during these unprecedented times?
Becoming a VUCA leader can give you the skills you need to thrive during these times. Bill George wrote about the VUCA leader in VUCA 2.0: A Strategy For Steady Leadership in an Unsteady World. He believes that to lead they must have:
Vision: A VUCA environment creates chaos and a leader has to be able to see through it and have a clear vision for their teams
Understanding: You must understand the team’s capabilities. It is important to understand how your team will respond and adapt during rapidly changing situations.
Courage: Managerial courage to jump in, take risks, and make the tough decisions is often necessary. Be bold and open to taking risks.
Adaptability: Leaders have to be flexible and able to adapt to every twist and turn that you will take. Leaders will be faced with internal and external circumstances that require rapid adaptation.

Deploying positive leadership strategies can get better results, even in these uncertain times. Positive Organizational Behaviors look to focus on the untapped power of positivity and how it may contribute to the workplace (Luthans, Youssef, et al., 2007).
Several positive psychological capacities were considered and studied to determine their impact on the workplace. It determined that Hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism best met the POB criteria (Jensen & Luthans, 2006; Luthans, 2002; Luthans, Vogelgesang, & Lester, 2006; Luthans & Youssef, 2004). Focusing on these positive capacities has been empirically proven to increase employee performance, job satisfaction, and positive organizational citizenship behaviors.
Leaders can:
· Develop Hope through goal setting and finding motivation.
· Develop Optimism by changing focus and reframing situations.
· Develop Resilience by facing reality, searching for meaning, and improvising in tough situations.
· Develop Efficacy by focusing on past successes, reframing negative experiences, and creating situations for success.
Things may be rapidly changing around us but there is also an opportunity for leaders to step up, embrace the challenges they face, and motivate their teams to thrive during these uncertain times. Mastering the skills to lead in this environment is critical to not only a leader's success but their teams as well. Be courageous, Be Positive, and Be an Example guiding your teams through these times and beyond.
