Match Streams - Texas Style!

I’ve written on here previously about my experiences producing club match streams for the likes of Connahs Quay, TNS and Wrexham. Now, I’ve just had my biggest adventure in this exciting new field of small budget production.

A couple of months ago, I was contacted, via LinkedIn, by Tony Merola, a Wrexham lad I’d tutored on FAW coaching courses. He was now working in Texas at Fort Worth Vaqueros, a club in the NPSL, a new grassroots structure that has clubs in leagues across America. The Vaqueros were celebrating their 10th anniversary, did I fancy covering a game? There were two options suggested, from home or at the stadium, needless to say, having not set foot outside the UK for 4 years, I said ‘Stadium!’. And so, wheels began to turn…

A generous club sponsor, Jon at The Chat Room Pub stepped in to provide support and then probably immediately regretted it as he also produced the match coverage and I was now bombarding him with emails suggesting tweaks and changes based on the fact I was now avidly scrutinising their match streams.

Tony was going to be my host for the trip so, with everything in place, flights were booked, plans confirmed. Saturday June 10th was game day, prior to that there was going to be a Q and A session at aforementioned Chat Room pub and I’d go to see the squad training to help prep for the game. After a rollercoaster season with Leeds and Wrexham, this was a proper exciting way to round off my season.

As ever with this stuff, I wanted to try and help lift the bar a little. Jon was already initiating some of the uplifts we’d discussed and clearly there was a desire on his and their part to see if they could match my requests. Budget is crucial. You have to be realistic about what can be done with a small budget, or, in this case no budget. Still, I’d seen enough already to make me think we could have a crack at this, based on the match streams I’d produced previously, in turn based on the experiences gained covering live sport for 30+ years.

Close to departure, I produced a running order incorporating some new elements - pre-match presentation, a touchline reporter, covering the half time interval with content and adding an MVP interview at full time. All of this was done in consultation with Jon, the poor guy. We had 2 cameras, 3 presenters and Jon as director, all of which which I felt gave us the scope to achieve the additional aims.

I almost feel like I could write another book about my experiences, it was an amazing trip! I stayed with wonderful, generous hosts, I met friendly, welcoming people and I took part in one of the craziest nights of broadcasting I’ve ever experienced…

In terms of the events of the evening, the amount of hurdles we had to overcome was unprecedented. The PA system stopped working for the playing of the anthem, so the PA guy improvised and belted out the anthem himself down his PA mic. Our match cameraman arrived about 5 minutes before kick off, Vaqueros scored after 82 seconds so thank good I’d prepared properly, then a serious injury to a player in the 2nd half forced a 25 minute delay whilst we waited for an ambulance to arrive. That’s a lot of talking! As I mentioned earlier, I’d suggested a touchline reporter role and we had Megan, previously part of the commentary team, down there. Circumstances like this, a serious injury, a long delay, are exactly when you need someone in that position. She’d never done it before, I had time to give her a couple of minutes briefing before we began and yet she played a blinder. Her input was crucial in trying to relay updates on the seriousness of the situation when we were aware the young player’s family might well be watching.

Happily, an ambulance arrived and we saw him give a big thumbs up as he was stretchered off, dramatic stuff. Then, a further delay with no apparent cause. Turns out one of the opposition players had required a ‘comfort break’, quite a long one actually, and we all had to wait until he returned. That wasn’t the end of it. Just as we finally got going again, the stream dropped out and we waited anxiously to see if Jon could fix it. He did, we got back on and we were able commentate successfully through to the end of a game that finished well over half an hour later than it should have done. The fact Vaqueros recorded their best win of the season made for a suitably upbeat climax to what had threatened to be a very dark night.

At full time, on a hot Texas evening, after 3 solid hours on air, I felt knackered! But there was a real sense of elation in the commentary box because we’d done it. We’d coped with everything that came our way and we’d kept going and we got through. We’d also incorporated all those extra elements to enhance the coverage. I was so proud of the team of people around me. They’d stepped up, they’d come through.

I really love that aspect of the match stream production - setting everybody goals, giving them some guidance and then watching them get stuck into it. Brilliant!

The day wasn’t done. We had a beer with some of the fans in town afterwards and then we headed home to rewatch the game on the big screen. That gave me chance to step back and analyse what we’d done together, just as it did Tony. I was happy. He was happy. Job done.

Coach Merola! A wonderful host and tour guide. Wrexham boys!

What a week!

Bryn, great job on the stream Saturday, and thanks for making the time for the Q&A on Friday evening. I know the Leeds fans in attendance had a blast. MOT

The coverage looked great Bryn with some hurdles in the way. Pretty cool to get a manager interview at half time too!
