Math Fluency......

Math fact automaticity: Ability to deliver correct answer immediately from memory without conscious thought

  • National mathematics advisory panel (2008) recommends fluent retrieval of addition and subtraction facts by end of grade 3.
  • Common core recommends students should be able to fluently know addition facts(single digit)and fluently perform addition, substraction, multiplication and division by grade 5.
  • NCT(2006) recommends that students by end of grade 2 should know addition and subtraction facts.

Based on the recommendation by various advisory panel, I was always curious to seek answers to the following questions.

  1. What are students mastery level in fact fluency? Does reaching mastery in facts benifit general math achievements?
  2. Does achieving math fluency help Sr grade (6 onwards) students wherein concepts are more abstract and requires learner to think more in terms of patterns than just static answers?
