No matter how educated, talented or rich you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all.

No matter how educated, talented or rich you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all.

I had to send my employees on leave for one of my small businesses because of COVID-19. These individuals working for me are all getting paid leave out of my own account. They have families and needs just like me. They support our company to make it successful and I support them when it is needed.

Many companies are sending their people home for weeks without pay. This would work out fine, if all bills, rent, and payments due were also cancelled for that period.

Then some employers are forcing employees to use their Paid Time Off (PTO) or vacation days to work from home. This is not right.

Employers, find a way to help your employees through this unprecedented time. Now is the time for companies to show empathy and care for their employees.

Loyalty is a two-way street. If you want to earn employees' loyalty show that you genuinely care.

I know this will not work for everyone especially small businesses who don't have the resources and are being negatively affected the most, but the larger companies can put things in place to help their employees. If your company is able to fully or partially support staff during these challenging times, it definitely should be done.

Empathy seems to be missing in our workplaces today. Have you checked in with your employees to see how they are doing? Don't be afraid to ask them:

  • Are you okay?
  • How are you doing today?
  • Is there anything I can do to help make this transition easier?

Show people that you genuinely care. Sometimes it's the little things we do that counts the most. It's the simple things people remember. The thoughtful gesture, the kind word, the much needed support.

We don't know how long this pandemic will last and it may not be feasible to keep taking care of our employees, but now more than ever in times of crisis, we need to be showing empathy and compassion to our hurting employees.
