May at RFS: How we hire, recent placements, NEW roles posted, and more
Greetings from RFS! May is often a busy time for hiring, especially as new college grads hit the job market for the first time each year. With that in mind, I wanted to share a bit on our hiring philosophy at RFS.
As I’ve built the team at Recruiting from Scratch, I’ve hired several recruiters with non-traditional experience or minimal recruiting experience. This hiring philosophy has worked for us in many ways.
For example, one of our top performers impressed me on the interview with sharing a story about how he got his sister on a basketball team by making a list of coaches and contacting each one until she got a spot. I thought that was awesome.
A lot of skills in recruiting can be taught and coached, but our team members who come with minimal or non-recruiting experience all have:
Initiative. They don’t wait for direction. They reach out to clients, reach out to candidates, send progress updates - they KNOW what people are looking for, and go after it.
Great people skills. Recruiters are in the people business. The ability to connect with clients and candidates, deliver great customer service, and be open to feedback are all needed to succeed in this industry.
Adaptability. Recruiting is a fast, moving business. Hiring needs change for our clients. A candidate we’re working with has multiple offers from other companies and needs to make a decision quickly.
Our top performers aren’t flustered by changes - they figure out how to make the best of a situation and come up with solutions that are a win-win for everyone.
Don’t get me wrong - we still hire and look for seasoned recruiters as well. Experience + soft skills is a great combo.
But, if you’re interested in becoming a recruiter (or any job) but worry you don’t have the “right” or “enough” experience - keep working at it. Developing initiative, people skills, and becoming adaptable will get you further than a lot of recruiting work experience will.
