McMillan Park Residents Seek Injunction Against Redevelopment

Washington residents near McMillan Park are seeking an injunction to block redevelopment after heavy construction equipment was moved onto the site in recent days.

They say the city is not following instructions from a D.C. Court of Appeals judgment in May that set conditions for the proposed redevelopment.

City officials have granted real estate developers a right to build a medical facility, community center and park at the site on the corner of Michigan and North Capitol avenues.

Some residents of the neighborhood working as a group called Friends of McMillan Park say it would create too much traffic and disruption.

McMillan Park is the site of an old sand filtration system that purified the city’s water for most of a century. It also is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

City officials deny they are trying to circumvent the Court of Appeals.

"The activity onsite involved testing the means and methods of anticipated construction activity to ensure the historic resources are protected according to the direction provided by the D.C. Court of Appeals," according to a statement from the D.C. Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.

Other residents disagree the redevelopment would create harm for them. They say it could add to their neighborhood amenities and property values.
