Below is the Q&A of our interview.
What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the security industry?
My interest in pursuing a career in the security industry was sparked by my own experiences with security incidents, such as break-ins and thefts. These incidents made me realize the importance of physical security and the impact it has on individuals and organizations. I wanted to be part of the solution and help create a safer environment for people.
You've achieved both CPP and PSP certifications. Can you share what you've learned from this experience and how it's impacted your work?
Achieving both CPP (Certified Protection Professional) and PSP (Physical Security Professional) certifications has been a valuable experience. These certifications have given me an in-depth understanding of the foundational principles, concepts, and best practices in physical security. It has broadened my knowledge base, enhanced my critical thinking skills, and validated my expertise in the field. This has had a significant impact on my work as I am now better equipped to analyze security risks, develop effective security strategies, and implement robust security measures.
As someone who has managed approved budgets and implemented security policies and SOPs, what are some key takeaways you'd like to share with others in the field?
Managing approved budgets and implementing security policies and SOPs has taught me the importance of careful planning, prioritization, and effective communication. One key takeaway is the need to align security measures with the organization's overall goals and objectives. It is essential to regularly review and update security policies and SOPs to adapt to changing threats and technologies. Additionally, collaboration with other departments and stakeholders is crucial for successful security implementation.
How do you stay current with the latest developments and trends in security, and what resources do you find most valuable?
As a security professional, staying current with the latest developments and trends in security is vital. I regularly attend industry conferences, seminars, and networking events to stay up-to-date. I also subscribe to industry publications, journals, and online forums to access valuable resources and gain insights from experts. Embracing continuous learning and actively participating in professional associations and communities helps me stay informed about emerging technologies, best practices, and industry trends.
As you're studying for PCI Certification, what are some key challenges you're facing, and how are you preparing to overcome them?
Studying for PCI (Professional Certified Investigator) Certification presents some unique challenges. Keeping up with the changing compliance requirements and understanding the complex framework can be demanding. To overcome these challenges, I am dedicating time to focused study, reinforcing my knowledge through practical application, and seeking guidance from experienced professionals in the field.
Looking back on your career so far, what's been the most rewarding experience or project you've worked on, and why was it so impactful?
The most rewarding experience in my career so far was being involved in the implementation of a comprehensive security program for high-profile events. It required meticulous planning, coordination with multiple agencies, and working under strict timelines. The impact of our efforts was evident as the events were conducted without any major security incidents. It was gratifying to see how our expertise and dedication contributed to the safety and success of the events.

How do you think the security industry is evolving, and what skills or knowledge do you think are essential for professionals to stay ahead of the curve?
The security industry is constantly evolving due to advancements in technology, emerging threats, and changing regulations. To stay ahead of the curve, professionals need to continually update their knowledge and skills. Acquiring expertise in areas such as cybersecurity, risk management, data protection, and emerging technologies like IoT and AI is critical. Additionally, being adaptable, proactive, and open to learning new methodologies and best practices is essential for success in this dynamic industry.
Can you share any advice or tips for professionals looking to advance their careers in the security industry?
My advice for professionals looking to advance their careers in the security industry is to focus on continuous learning and professional development. Pursue relevant certifications, attend industry conferences and seminars, join professional associations, and seek mentorship opportunities. Building a strong professional network and staying connected with industry experts can also open doors for new opportunities. Additionally, gaining practical experience through internships, volunteering, or taking on challenging projects can help develop essential skills and demonstrate your commitment to growth.
What do you think is the most significant misconception about the security industry, and how would you like to see it change?
One significant misconception about the security industry is that it only involves physical measures like guards, cameras, and access control systems. While these are essential components, the industry is much broader and encompasses areas such as risk management, cybersecurity, crisis management, and business continuity planning. To change this misconception, it is crucial to educate stakeholders and promote a holistic understanding of security as a multidimensional discipline that addresses both physical and virtual threats.
Finally, what's one thing you wish you knew earlier in your career, and what advice would you give to yourself if you could go back in time?
If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to be more proactive in seeking mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals in the industry. Building relationships with mentors who can provide guidance, share their expertise, and offer insights into career progression would have been invaluable. Additionally, I would advise myself to embrace lifelong learning and continuously seek opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills. The security industry is dynamic, and staying curious and adaptable is key to long-term success.
