Meet John Smith of Smith's Cooking Systems and Smiths BBQ’s

John Smith is an entrepreneur based in Temora, a town in regional NSW. He’s operated Smith's Cooking Systems for more than 22 years and his newest business is Smiths BBQs, a five-year-old company that manufactures and markets a portable barbeque that can be used in apartments, campers and caravans, as well as at picnics at the beach or the park.

 Finding opportunities in challenging situations is a key to success

Over his career, John has seen the highs and lows of bringing new products to market and how to innovate and pivot as market conditions change. He says that it’s being adaptable, shoring up your supply chain and looking for resources and people who can assist you that will help your business survive and thrive.

“My advice is to find the opportunities in challenging situations, such as COVID. For me, that was to become an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) company and not rely on outsourcing from either local or overseas companies.

“There are a lot of resources out there, especially from government departments or organisations backed by the government. Accept their help and advice. Geoff Reardon and ICN have been invaluable to me.

“Finally, setting up in regional NSW has a lot of benefits. We have an absolutely fantastic Council and they will do everything to help business to come set up here. If you're in a city, moving to a country town can lower many costs and create a better lifestyle, especially if you’re raising children,” says John.

Renewing connections can help create new opportunities

 John grew up playing football with ICN NSW Regional Manager Geoff Reardon in Temora, but lost touch as they got older. They reconnected when John was looking to apply for a fund grant and was given a list of organisations that could help, and he saw Geoff’s name as a representative of ICN NSW.

 “It’s been a pretty valuable reconnection. Geoff’s a great fellow, very knowledgeable about what he's doing and he's been a great source of information and contacts.

 “Geoff put me in touch with the University of Wollongong. Through that I’ve made new contacts and found new ways of doing business. This has led to me ordering a collaborative robot that is intuitive and works with people. Collaborative robots are pretty incredible and will help with mundane, repetitive jobs and I’m also bringing on board a young person once he has completed Year 10 at the end of this year as an apprentice to operate and program it,” says John. He came highly recommended from the Temora High School. They have been very helpful too.

  “I have recently received a grant to assist with business expansion.”

  Innovation is a necessity

 John’s original business, Smith's Cooking Systems, works closely with household appliance brands on designing and manufacturing bespoke products, including microwave oven trim kits. At its peak, John and his team made 20,000 products a year. As the business slowed after the GFC, John got interested in barbeques.

 “I could see the writing on the wall soon after the GFC. Some of the companies I worked with started looking to source products like mine from overseas markets, particularly from China,” says John.

 After a few false starts in the traditional barbeque market, he got into the portable barbeque business by working with a Chinese-based supplier, making some changes to the design and then importing it to Australia. Over time, he started making major changes to the design and was looking at supplying them to a caravan manufacturer when COVID hit. After multiple delays, things were getting back on track, but John realised that his business was vulnerable and there had to be a better way of doing things.

 “The caravan industry was going nuts and we could have sold thousands of barbeques, but I couldn't get the stock in. After the second long-term delay, I thought, "my business can't survive this type of supply chain issue," so I decided that I'll manufacture it here in Australia. Within just over nine months, I redesigned the product, got my fabrication equipment together and became an OEM business,” says John.

 “The design is compact and portable, which is great for camping and day trips but also for apartment living. The barbeque can be hung on a balcony wall using our innovative BBQ Balcony Box which is sold as an accessory, then you just drop the door down to cook and then fold it back up when you’re done. The seals on it means that it’s protected from insects, rodents wanting to get inside and also the sea air and dust.

 “My barbeques come with a grill, a cast plate, and a pizza stone as standard. I have a variety of slide systems, from a basic economic model to systems with dropdown sides. The Smiths BBQs come standard with the safe flame failure device. My latest innovation is a hood extender, which raises the barbeque lid up 120 mm so you can cook larger meals, including a full-sized roast, while still being able to store it easily in a small space – perfect for camping,” says John.
