Meet Safety Summit Speaker, Dr. Kent Corso
Co-Founder at Xcelerate Innovations
Full access to the virtual Appalachian Safety Summit opened today, August 10th, 2020. I have personally enjoyed recoding these presentations with our speakers. In each recording, participants will view a 30 minute presentation followed by a lively 30 minute discussion between myself and the speaker, to drill down on the concepts and tactics to get at the key behavioral practices targeting infection control. I trust you will enjoy and learn from these discussions as much as I have.
Today, we're introducing you to Dr. Kent Corso and his session titled, “Making the Right Decisions at the Right Time: What Can We Learn from COVID-19?”
Session Description
In a world which is becoming increasingly complex and technologically advanced, we are all bombarded with information. Separating the unimportant information from the necessary data is the first step that can help us make the right decisions at the right time. Of course, when basing our decisions on data, it is critical to have: 1) high quality information, 2) immediate access to it and 3) strong methods to understand what the data mean.
Using a factory as an example, if one cannot measure what's happening in the facility, or has to wait weeks to learn what's happening in the facility or has no idea how to interpret, analyze and draw conclusions from the information, it is near impossible to effectively run any operational or safety program at every level of the system. Even more difficult is making predictions about what favorable or unfavorable events might happen next.
During this pre-recorded session, the presenter will discuss an analytical tool, the standard celeration chart (SCC), that can be used by anyone who is measuring performance. Performance can be measured in one human, facility or organization, but also across a set of humans, facilities or organizations. The SCC uniquely enables a standard view across a system of how rapidly positive or negative events are occurring. This tool delivers predictive power not detectable by traditional methods of analyzing data. The SCC been used in industry, the military, the education field as well as healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic will be used as an exemplar to illustrate how this tool can help decision-makers and leaders who must rely on information for effective policy making and public guidance. This discussion will conclude by describing promise the SCC could pose to the broader field of safety.
