In Memoriam: Professor Beyene Petros – A Pillar of Knowledge, Peace, and Democracy
Ethiopia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished sons, Professor Beyene Petros, who passed away on September 17, 2024. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the realms of education, civil rights, and political leadership. Known for his tireless work as an educator, civil fighter, and advocate for peace and democracy, Beyene was a central figure in Ethiopia’s struggle for a just society.
Beyene's journey was remarkable, rooted in both academic excellence and a commitment to social justice. After completing his education in the United States, he returned to Ethiopia with a wealth of knowledge and a passion for change. He quickly rose to prominence, not only as a professor of Biology at Addis Ababa University but also as a key figure in the country’s political landscape. His education abroad enriched his perspective, but it was his love for his homeland that drove his dedication to shaping Ethiopia’s future.
As a young man, Professor Beyene was actively involved in Ethiopia's historic student movement, a critical force for social and political change in the country. This movement, which sought to address injustices and fight for the rights of the Ethiopian people, shaped Beyene’s lifelong commitment to civil liberties and democratic ideals. His participation in the student movement was more than a formative experience—it laid the groundwork for his future as a political leader who understood the power of youth, activism, and intellectual rigor in driving societal progress.
As an academic, Beyene was an exemplary professor at Addis Ababa University, where he mentored countless students over the years. His passion for education went beyond the confines of biology. He was a teacher who encouraged critical thinking, nurturing not just the minds but also the moral compasses of his students. His return from the U.S. was driven by a mission to empower Ethiopia’s youth, believing that an educated generation was the key to the country’s advancement.
In addition to his academic career, Beyene's role as a politician and civil advocate left an indelible mark. He served as a member of the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives, representing the electoral district of Badawacho in the Hadiya Zone. He was a champion for the marginalized and underrepresented, ensuring that the voices of Southern Ethiopia were heard on the national stage. His work in parliament was characterized by his integrity, his unshakeable belief in human rights, and his determination to bring about meaningful change through democratic principles.

Beyene’s contribution to Ethiopia extended beyond politics and education. As a civil fighter, he was a beacon of hope for peace, tirelessly advocating for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the unity of Ethiopia’s diverse peoples. His vision for a more inclusive Ethiopia, where democracy and justice prevailed, continues to inspire many. He understood that peace could not be achieved through division, but through dialogue, understanding, and respect for all citizens.
For those, from Southern Ethiopia, and especially in the Hadiya community, Professor Beyene was more than a public figure—he was a role model, a representative of their values, and a symbol of hope for future generations. His leadership was marked by humility, wisdom, and a deep connection to the people he served.
Personally, I had the honor of considering Beyene like an older brother, a mentor whose advice and leadership guided not just my own path, but the paths of so many. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, the students he inspired, and the communities he empowered.
As we say farewell to Professor Beyene Petros, we reflect on a life devoted to education, peace, and democracy. His contributions to Ethiopia’s political and academic spheres will be remembered for generations to come. In a time of significant challenges, his legacy reminds us of the enduring power of knowledge, activism, and principled leadership.
