Mental Clarity for Leaders: Where to Find Peace-of-Mind in a Busy World
Peace-of-mind is not found by doing anything.
Going on vacation, being out in nature, exercising, or any other "reset" activity is not where peace-of-mind is found.
Peace-of-mind is found in the back recesses of your mind when your thinking quiets down.
Why going on vacation, being out in nature, and exercising often works to calm us down is because during these activities you give yourself permission to put your thinking down for a while.
And going on vacation, being in nature, and exercising isn’t always a feasible option in the middle of your workday when pressure and stress are at their highest.
Here's another trick –
Whatever you're thinking about, put it on a mental shelf and set it aside.
It doesn’t matter how urgent or critical it is.
Just experiment with mentally putting it down for a while.
Know that doing so is not lazy, passive, or irresponsible.
By putting your thinking on a shelf for a while, you create space in your mind for new, innovative thinking to come through.
Because there is an alternative to analyzing and “working out” any problem you’re working through –
Which is first accessing peace-of-mind, that then creates space for mental clarity and decisive thinking.
Another word for Peace-of-mind could be a vacation state-of-mind, but you don’t need to go on vacation to access it.
You just need to give yourself permission to put your thinking down for a while to create space for fresh thinking to come through.
Give it a try today with whatever thoughts are taking up a lot of your head space.
