Mental Health Awareness at RLB Indian Ocean: Insights from Renowned Psychologist Mr. Vijay Ramanjooloo
Last Friday, the renowned Mr. Vijay Ramanjooloo took center stage for 3 hours at RLB Indian Ocean’s head office in Mauritius to address a crucial topic: mental health awareness. His engaging and informative session captivated the audience, shedding light on the importance of understanding psychology and managing stress effectively.
Mr. Ramanjooloo began by interacting with the audience, posing the question, "What do we understand by psychology?" The responses varied, encompassing aspects such as the brain, emotions, mental illness, trauma treatment, and happiness. This diverse range of answers underscored the multifaceted nature of psychology.
He then delved into the etymology of the word psychology, explaining that it derives from the Greek words "psukhe," meaning soul, and "logos," meaning science. This foundation set the stage for a deeper exploration of the human mind.
To illustrate the complexity of psychology, Mr. Ramanjooloo used the analogy of an iceberg. He explained that the visible 10% above the water represents external behavior, while the hidden 90% beneath the surface symbolizes internal feelings, emotions, and personal history. This powerful metaphor highlighted how much of our psychological makeup remains unseen and often misunderstood.

Addressing the topic of stress, Mr. Ramanjooloo emphasized that it is sometimes necessary. He illustrated this with a dramatic example: being confronted by someone pointing a gun at you. In such a situation, he explained, we have three choices: Fight, Flight, or Freeze. The adrenaline surge induced by stress can heighten alertness and prompt immediate action. While stress can enhance performance in short bursts, it becomes detrimental to health if it persists. "When adrenaline and cortisol are constantly secreted, the heart rate remains elevated, along with blood pressure and glucose levels. This hormonal imbalance can lead to diseases like obesity and diabetes," he cautioned.
To safeguard our well-being, Mr. Ramanjooloo stressed the importance of recognizing early warning signs of stress, both physical and behavioral. These signs can include skin problems, alcohol abuse, difficulty concentrating, and changes in eating habits. He highlighted the power of seeking help: "Often, the courage to ask for help is enough to bring relief. A counselor or a loved one can help you gain perspective and find a way forward. Talking is liberating," he reminded the audience.
Understanding the sources of stress is crucial for making informed decisions and avoiding negative consequences. Mr. Ramanjooloo outlined several stress-inducing scenarios: high demands, tight deadlines, feelings of being overwhelmed, and loss of control over time. He urged everyone to be mindful of these triggers and to take proactive steps to manage stress effectively.
In closing, Mr. Ramanjooloo's session at RLB Indian Ocean was a profound reminder of the importance of mental health awareness. By understanding the depths of our psychology and recognizing the impact of stress, we can take meaningful steps toward better mental health and overall well-being.
