Mental Health Awareness Week Special: Dealing with Job Search Anxiety

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week (13th – 19th May) and if you’ve landed on this page, chances are you’re navigating the thrilling (and sometimes nerve-wracking) world of job hunting. Here at Charterhouse Recruitment, we’ve been part of many such journeys since our start in 1998. We understand that hunting for that perfect job in York, Chester, or anywhere in between isn’t just about tweaking your CV or acing that interview; it’s also about managing the roller coaster of emotions that comes with it.

Now, before we get into it, let us tell you a story that I think will resonate with many of you. It’s about Alex (not their real name 😉), a candidate who came to us feeling completely overwhelmed. They had been sending out applications left, right, and centre, but the silence on the other end was deafening. The stress was getting to them, affecting not just their job search but their overall well-being, too. Sounds familiar? It’s certainly not unusual with reports that candidates don’t hear back from more than half the jobs they apply for!

But here’s the deal – your mental health matters, significantly. It shapes your perceptions, your productivity, and even how you present yourself to potential employers. In essence, managing job search anxiety is not just about coping; it’s about thriving in your job hunt.

Mental Health and Your Job Search

At Charterhouse Recruitment, a big part of our ethos – “listen first, talk second” – is about acknowledging the person behind the CV. We’ve seen firsthand that prioritising candidates’ mental well-being leads to not just successful placements but happier, more fulfilling career paths.

Here’s How We Can Tackle Job Search Anxiety:

Recognise and Acknowledge

Understanding the signs of job search anxiety is the first step. It’s okay to feel stressed or anxious. These feelings are valid responses to uncertainty and rejection – two constants in the job-hunting process. Remember Alex? The turning point for them was recognising these feelings and deciding they didn’t have to navigate them alone.

Set Realistic Targets

We encourage setting achievable goals, like tailoring your CV for specific roles rather than applying en masse. Quality over quantity every time, folks! This approach not only yields better results but reduces the anxiety of waiting for responses from hundreds of applications.

Seek Support

Here’s where we shine. Our team at Charterhouse Recruitment becomes part of your support system. By focusing on relationships, we ensure you feel seen and understood throughout your job search. And believe me, having a cheerleader in your corner makes a huge difference.

Celebrate the Small Wins

Got an interview? Celebrate! Received feedback? That’s a step forward. We remind our candidates (like Alex), that each small victory brings you closer to your goal. It’s all about perspective.

Make A Routine, But Keep It Light

Creating a structure can immensely help in giving your days purpose and direction. However, there’s a fine line between a helpful routine and a rigid schedule that ends up causing more stress. Mix in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. For instance, schedule your job search tasks for the morning and leave afternoons for walks, reading, or whatever floats your boat. The key is balance.

Personal Anecdote Alert: There was a candidate, let’s call them Jamie. Jamie was all about schedules—so much so, their day was packed from dawn till dusk with job search activities. It wasn’t until they infused some fun into their routine that they started seeing job hunting less as a chore and more as a part of their well-rounded day. Spoiler alert: Jamie landed a job they love without burning out in the process.

Dial Down the Digital

In this age of instant connectivity, it’s tempting to be always “on” – constantly checking emails, scrolling through job boards, or comparing yourself to LinkedIn profiles. Here’s some friendly advice: don’t. Set specific times for these activities and, outside of those times, give yourself permission to unplug. Trust us your mental health will thank you.

Practice Mindfulness and Gratitude

Mindfulness might sound like just another buzzword, but it’s a powerful tool in combating anxiety. Simple breathing exercises or daily gratitude practices can shift your focus from worries about the future to appreciation of the present. Even on tough days, try to list three things you’re thankful for. This practice can significantly shift your mood and outlook.

Lean On Your Tribe

Remember the “seek support” point from earlier? Here’s where it gets real. Surround yourself with people who get it—friends, family, fellow job seekers, and yes, your friends here at Charterhouse Recruitment. Having a support network can make the job hunt feel less lonely and more manageable. And when Alex finally landed their dream job, guess who was among the first to celebrate with them? Their tribe, including their biggest cheerleaders, us.

Wrapping It Up: Your Mental Health Matters

So, there you have it – your guide to tackling job search anxiety with a bit of help from your friends at Charterhouse Recruitment. We believe in you and your journey, understanding that while the path may not always be smooth, it’s yours, and it’s leading somewhere great.

As we part ways (digitally, for now), remember: managing your mental health is not a side task in your job search; it’s a core part of it. By taking care of yourself, setting realistic goals, and leaning on your support system, you’re not just looking for a job; you’re paving the way for a fulfilling career and life.

And remember, whether you’re just starting your search or you’re feeling stuck along the way, Charterhouse Recruitment is here for you.
