Similar games: inspiration or lack of creativity?

When the line between innovation and imitation starts to blur in the gaming industry.

In recent years, the gaming industry has been a hotbed for heated debates. One of the most frequent topics revolves around a phenomenon we're all familiar with: games that look like copies of other games. Whether it’s through mechanics, aesthetics, or even narrative, we are witnessing a flood of titles that seem to be following the same blueprint. But the burning question is: Is this a lack of creativity or a legitimate attempt to improve something that already works?

Why do games look alike?

The influence of successful formulas

The gaming industry is a risk-driven market. Developing a AAA title can cost anywhere from $50 million to $300 million, depending on the scale and complexity. With such high investments, many studios prefer to bet on formulas that have already proven successful.

For example, when Dark Souls (FromSoftware) established itself as a landmark in the soulslike genre, a wave of similar titles began to emerge. Games like Nioh, Mortal Shell, and Lords of the Fallen borrowed key elements: punishing combat, enigmatic storytelling, and interconnected worlds. The result? An entire subgenre born from the repetition and adaptation of a successful idea.

But what’s the problem with that? When too many companies try to replicate the success of a single game, the market can become saturated, resulting in redundant experiences and a loss of creative identity.

Lack of creativity or following the trend?

The line between inspiration and copying is thin. In some cases, studios genuinely draw inspiration to create something innovative. Hollow Knight borrowed elements from Metroid and Castlevania, but added a unique art direction, deep narrative, and meticulously interconnected world design, elevating the Metroidvania genre to new heights.

On the other hand, consider the flood of battle royales that followed the massive success of PUBG and Fortnite. How many similar titles emerged, attempting to grab a share of the market without offering anything truly new? Apex Legends managed to innovate by introducing hero mechanics and contextual communication, but many others simply vanished, forgotten by the gaming community.

Market impact: what do gamers really want?

The biggest impact of the proliferation of similar games is player fatigue. When everything starts to feel the same, excitement diminishes. This can be seen in user reviews on platforms like Steam, where games that follow repetitive formulas often receive feedback like:

"More of the same." "Nothing new here." "I’ve played this before, just with a different name."

According to a Newzoo report, 73% of players prefer to experience something new with each release. This means that while studios may attract initial attention by copying a successful formula, long-term retention may be low.

Moreover, when indie studios manage to innovate with fewer resources, they often steal the spotlight. Take Hades (Supergiant Games), for example. It reinvented the roguelike genre with dynamic storytelling, engaging characters, and fluid gameplay. The result? Over 1 million copies sold in less than a year and numerous Game of the Year awards.

When imitation pays off

It’s not all negative. Sometimes borrowing elements from other games can be beneficial, especially if the goal is to improve technical or mechanical aspects that were not well-executed in the original. A great example is Genshin Impact (miHoYo), initially compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, the game added RPG mechanics, cooperative multiplayer, and a gacha monetization model that attracted millions of players and generated over $4 billion in revenue within its first two years.

This strategy is also evident in the evolution of shooters. Call of Duty: Warzone borrowed elements from Fortnite and PUBG, but refined the formula with superior graphics, unique respawn mechanics, and integration with previous franchise titles, creating a more polished and well-received experience.

Long-term consequences

If the trend of imitation continues without innovation, the industry risks:

  1. Creative Stagnation: New developers may feel discouraged from exploring original ideas.
  2. Loss of Player Trust: Gamers may start ignoring releases that don’t offer something truly new.
  3. Cycle of Saturation: Entire genres could become irrelevant due to an excess of similar games.

On the other hand, if studios invest more in innovation and experimentation, even with risks, the market could expand, bringing new experiences that reignite players' passion.

What to expect in the future?

With the rise of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and blockchain, the gaming industry has a unique opportunity to break this cycle of imitation. Studios that manage to balance inspiration with innovation will have a better chance of capturing the attention of an increasingly demanding audience.

The message for studios? Don’t be afraid to take risks. The industry needs new ideas, unique experiences, and, above all, creativity. Because, in the end, what truly makes us love a game is not how similar it is to another, but how different it makes us feel.

And you, what do you think about this wave of similar games? Do you prefer innovation, or do you believe there’s always room to improve a successful formula? Share your thoughts!
