Micro-grid Project in Sakha, Russia, 1MW/327kWh

Toshiba is proud to announce the successful delivery of a Battery Energy Storage System to power a 1MW/327kWh microgrid project in the northern Russian settlement of Tiksi.

Tiksi experiences some of the most severe temperatures on the planet, with freezing arctic winters lasting for 8 months of the year. And when a micro grid is regularly operating in below-freezing temperatures, it needs a powerful solution backing it up.

The first of its kind in Russia, Toshiba’s new BESS is a reliable and efficient system, including wind smoothing and diesel generators with a start and stop support system. Coupled with the use of our high performance SCiB Rechargeable Battery, it delivers the capability of operating at ambient temperature as low as -30 °C, making it the ideal solution for the severe Sakha climate.

This project included engineering design, manufacturing, FAT, quality assurance  and control, delivery, installation, and commissioning. Special thanks to our Electrical Controls Engineer, Niroshan Gnanasegaram, Jahzeel Ani, and Yamazaki Shuji for compiling and delivering this successful project together in Russia.

Pictured Above: Toshiba Rechargeable Battery SCiB which are industrial lithium-ion batteries. The SCiB uses lithium titanium oxide in its anode to achieve excellent characteristics such as: safety (low risk of fire explosion), long life (cycle life of 20,000 times and above) and it has rapid charging abilities (rapidly charges about 80% of the capacity in 6 minutes).

Toshiba has been leading the way in energy systems since 1894, when we pioneered our first transformer. We bring extensive design development experience to the table, and build upon this knowledge to provide engineered products that meet our clients’ complex system requirements.
