Micronization Excellence Center
MEC is Micronization Excellence Center: an exciting addition to our capabilities located at FPS production facility in Fiorenzuola d’Arda (Italy). Our R&D and Test Center is equipped with ISO8 test suites that allow the execution of micronization technical tests from laboratory to pilot, to production quantities. The center is equipped with state-of-the-art with up-to-date jet milling and milling equipment as well as the analytical instruments. Two isolators are also available to protect the products and the operators.
Laser difraction analysis is one of the techniques to measure the particle size of micronized powders. It has a high level of accuracy, repeatability, robustness, and by using this method, in-process control can be performed quickly without interrupting the entire micronization process.
To get the desired final PSD, the choice of mill is important: why do you prefer a jet mill? Jet milling is the standard method of API particle size reduction when particle size is important for delivery efficiency. Particle size reduction is enabled by particle-to-particle collision, pushed by compressed gas. This reduces metal contamination therefore no lubrication is required.
Mechanical milling is typically best suited to delivering uniform particle sizes above 20 microns. It enhance particle homogeneity, distribution uniformity, compound bioavailability and solubility. Particle size reduction occurs with mechanical impact (crushing with a screen or pins), no compressed gas is needed. It can reduce flakes and de-lump agglomerates without fine particles.

Cryogenic milling is the act of cooling a material and then reducing it into a small particle size. Because of the cold temperatures, the cryogenic process keeps the properties of heat sensitive powders. The low temperature substantially improves breaking down particles and also elastic materials can easily be micronized under cryogenic conditions.
The MEC can be used for process optimization of a known product or for defining the best process of a new product.
