Microsoft confirms global Azure outage on July 30 caused by a Cyber Attack

Microsoft has confirmed that the recent Azure outage was caused by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) cyberattack. This disruption affected various services, including Microsoft 365 products like Office and Outlook, leaving users unable to access these tools for nearly 10 hours.

The incident comes shortly after a CrowdStrike update led to crashes on Microsoft Windows machines. The outage affected banks, hospitals, doctors' offices, pharmacies, grocery stores, and businesses worldwide.

The DDoS attack led to an unexpected surge in traffic, overwhelming Azure Front Door and Azure Content Delivery Network components, causing errors, timeouts, and latency spikes. Although Microsoft’s DDoS protection mechanisms were activated, an error in their implementation inadvertently amplified the attack’s impact.

This event underscores the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures and highlights the need for Cybersecurity Insurance.
