Midterm elections and your publicity

Midterm elections and your publicity

For the next two weeks, the media will be consumed with midterm elections. There are so many tight races and we just don't know which way the pendulum will swing.

The day after the 2016 Presidential election, I had a meeting with several people from the United Inventors Association. They were in town to work with what everyone thought was going to be President-elect Hilary Clinton's staff. What they found is that they had no one to meet with as the staff would now be President-elect Trump's. You don't know until all the votes are counted who is going to win so this is a great opportunity to share your expertise without dealing with political affiliation.

I generally avoid all things politics when pitching the media but there is a bigger picture here where you can position yourself as the expert without being political. What does it mean for your industry if one party or the other is in power? Are there programs that one side is passionate about that could help or hurt your industry? I like to stick with facts and discuss expertise. Look at the bigger picture of what the elections mean, especially in your local market.

This is a great time to be the expert and land in the media over the next few weeks. We talk about newsjacking all the time and this is something that can be newsjacked up and until a few weeks after the election. Think about what you can pitch and start pitching today!

Great article Christina Daves! During that 2016 election and beyond it was very difficult to get booked on national news programs due to the ever-evolving news-making events. Newsjacking was the best strategy to garner media and remain relevant.
