Miles Government win in stopping energy retailers’ smart meter sting
The Miles Government will always take action to help Queenslanders every way we can, and we’ll always champion better protections for consumers.
Not only are we offering nation-leading cost of living relief - we’re ensuring Queenslanders can easily access the best energy tariff options for their household.
Under the proposed change, southeast Queensland households moved to time of use tariffs following the installation of a smart meter, will now be able to revert to a flat tariff.
It is designed to pair with the Australian Energy Market Commission’s three-year ban on tariff changes without consent - an initiative spearheaded by the Miles Government.
Queensland lobbied for the new rules through the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council after learning customers were experiencing bill shock by unknowingly being put on the different tariff.
In regional Queensland where electricity tariffs are regulated by the Queensland Competition Authority, Ergon Energy Retail is not able to change a customer’s tariff without the informed consent of the customer.
At present, southeast Queensland retailers can assign any customer on a smart meter to a demand or time-of-use energy tariff. They are only obliged to notify the customer of the change before the next bill is sent.
Time of use tariffs do have the potential to save Queenslanders significant costs on their energy bills, however achieving those savings is often contingent on consumers understanding their energy usage.
Doing the right thing by Queenslanders is what matters most.
We will always back Queenslanders and work hard to lower the cost of living, while the LNP offered no state-wide relief when electricity prices soared 43%.

3moThe same person who put a post up showing Queensland energy prices are down 11% while every other State went up??? Even with smart metres energy prices are going up. Instead of handing out money maybe hand out the drugs you on so people don't realise they been scammed

3moFew things still need to happen here. When we get smart meters the water heating needs to be set to every 15 minutes heating every 2nd hour at peak hours. This will cut network stress in half at peak times. 2nd the peak power multiplier on bills needs to be cut back to a maximum of 2 weeks. everyone who enters TOU must pass a test of knowledge about how it's calculated. Most people can't understand how 2.5 KW for 15min once a month. Doesn't equal 2.5kw on their monthly bill. It equals 150 kw/h for the month. Many people will use up to 5 or 6. If their water heater kicks while turning on the AC and starting to cook dinner. This is the cause of bill shock. Remember it's (use per 30min)*2*30=energy used. This calculation is used every hour between 4pm and 9pm. So if your peak usage time changes day to day. Then your $500 bill would be closer to $2000 to $3000. So every one on time of use should have a real time energy monitoring to be eligible. This part is basic common sense.
