Minding Your Own Business: How to Close Distractions and Focus on What Matters to You
Let’s be real, life is noisy. Between the constant pings from our phones, the latest binge-worthy series, and the endless scroll of social media, staying focused feels like an uphill battle. But what if you could shut out all the noise and actually focus on what matters most to you? This past year, it has been a constant struggle for me as a new mom, working full time, studying, creating impact initiatives, trying to keep fit, and stay in touch with friends and family.
In these past few months, I have created a hack, and that is truly just focusing and minding the things I should mind at any given time and not aimlessly doing things. Everyone has a way to self-talk themselves into doing what they are supposed to do. For instance, some people's motivating word is, "You can do it." When I am aimlessly scrolling through social media and I know I am not supposed to be doing that, I just shout it out or scream it in my head, "Adedolapo, mind your own business." Trust me, it works.
Focus is like a superpower. It lets you channel your energy and attention towards things that actually move the needle in your life. But getting there? It’s more than just trying harder. It’s about being strategic. Here’s how you can mind your own business and get your life together, with a touch of James Clear wisdom (the guy who wrote the famous book -ATOMIC HABITS).
1. Know What Matters
First things first: figure out what really matters to you. What are your top priorities? Write them down and rank them. This list is your north star. Whenever distractions come knocking, you’ll know what to ignore and what to focus on.
2. Cut the Crap
I am big on cutting out the fluff. Do a “time audit” to see where your hours are going. Are there tasks that don’t serve your goals? Are you spending too much time on things that drain you? If it’s not essential, it’s gotta go.
3. Create Your Zen Zone
Your environment has a huge impact on your ability to focus. Make your workspace distraction-free. Here’s how:
4. Build Habits, Not Hype
Habits are your secret weapon. Create routines that support your priorities. Start your day with a morning routine that primes you for productivity—think exercise, meditation, and goal-setting. Wind down with an evening routine that helps you unplug and relax.

5. Block Your Time
Time blocking is a game-changer. Schedule chunks of time for focused work on your priorities. During these blocks, go full-on “Do Not Disturb” mode. James Clear suggests starting with short blocks and gradually extending them as your focus improves.
6. Be Mindful, Stay Present
Mindfulness can seriously up your focus game. By staying present, you can reduce the impact of distractions and boost your attention span. Try meditation, deep breathing, or just taking a moment to center yourself before diving into work.
7. Set Boundaries Like a Boss
Protecting your focus means setting boundaries. This might look like:
8. Reflect and Adjust
Reflection is key to staying on track. At the end of each week, take a moment to review your progress. Are you sticking to your priorities? Are new distractions creeping in? Make adjustments as needed to keep improving.
Conclusion
Minding your own business is all about taking control of your attention and focusing on what truly matters. By defining your priorities, cutting out distractions, and building strong habits, you can create a life that’s not just busy but meaningful. Remember, focus isn’t a one-and-done deal. it’s an ongoing practice. Stick with it, and you’ll find that your ability to concentrate becomes one of your greatest assets.
Thank you for getting to the end of this article but before you go. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!! (Yes I am shouting at you).
