Miracle inventions: laser system for seeing a robot car for rain, snow and dense fog has already been created

Today we introduce to you invention in laser physics, IT and automotive industry.

Researchers from Massachusetts have discovered that regardless of the density of the fog reflected by this fog light always forms a strictly defined image.

This discovery they used in their further real development. Based on this, they developed a new laser vision system that would allow the robot car to see through rain, snow and thick fog even if a person can not see in such conditions for more than a few steps.

The new system uses laser light, which generates short-term flashes. Reflected by fog or obstruction, light is recorded by a special sensor and the computer calculates the time required for the sensor to again recover to normal after the laser pulse.

In good weather, this method is a very accurate method for measuring distance. But in the fog, which consists of countless tiny water droplets, the laser light is scattered in all directions and returns to the sensor of the system at any time.

The solution to the problem of isolating a useful signal from noise is a new algorithm for processing the data stream from a special camera, which counts the number of photons that hit its sensor for intervals of a trillionth of a second.

When the received data fill an array of a sufficient size, a number of mathematical filters are applied to them, which allocate only bursts of real data containing information about objects hidden behind a veil of thick fog.

Created by scientists, a prototype of the fog system was tested inside a special chamber, the length of which is about one meter. This system was able to distinguish objects a couple of centimeters in size in the conditions of such a thick artificial mist, through which a person could not penetrate.

In the near future, researchers plan to install an experimental system on a real car and test its operation in real conditions.

According to preliminary calculations, this system will be able to see objects moving at a sufficient distance from the car (from 30 to 50 meters), which will leave time for reaction and implementation of all necessary actions.
