MobilEdu: International School Mobility
In today's globalised world, student mobility in international schools is becoming increasingly important. Student migration brings numerous benefits, such as the recognition of degree certificates worldwide and exposure to intercultural environments, while creating new standards and challenges for education institutions. International education provides students with various advantages including proficiency in a foreign language, enhanced academic competence, intercultural competency development, an expanded network of international friends and professionals, personal growth opportunities, and improved employment prospects.
International student mobility has become a key aspect of education, shaping the present and future lives of students (Costa 2020). Moreover, international organisations, such as UNESCO and the OECD, recognise the importance of international mobility in achieving quality education goals. The volume of comparative international studies on student achievement, such as TIMSS/PIRLS/PISA, and the number of international students worldwide are clear evidence of the growing importance of mobility in international schools (Győri, 2019).
In response to these developments, higher education institutions have been tasked with revisiting and revising their curricula to meet international standards. Administrators are challenged to create curricula that integrate transnational and intercultural perspectives and align them with the learning outcomes expected in the global market for employment (Francisco, 2022). Administrators must ensure that their institutions produce competent graduates who are preferred in the global job market. Furthermore, student mobility in international schools is influenced by cooperation and competition.
Student mobility fosters international cooperation, knowledge transfer, mutual understanding, and peace (Wulz & Rainer, 2015). However, it is driven by economic and market factors. International student mobility has become a thriving industry, with recruitment teams, education agencies, and institutions selling international education to meet the demand (Yazan, 2022). In order to fully benefit from international perspectives brought in through student mobility, it is essential to also engage in "internationalization at home" (Wada et al., 2020).
In conclusion, international student mobility in schools presents both advantages and challenges. It provides students with numerous benefits including language proficiency, academic competence, intercultural competency development, expanded networks, personal growth opportunities, and improved employment prospects. However, this also poses challenges for higher education institutions in terms of aligning their curricula with international standards and competing in the market for international students. Additionally, international student mobility brings financial benefits to institutions through the export of higher education services (Francisco 2022). Overall, mobility in international schools plays a crucial role in achieving quality education goals by promoting global perspectives, intercultural competence, and economic growth.
