Modern Politics is using the Mussolini's Playbook.

The rise of populist leaders in recent years has drawn comparisons to historical figures who led authoritarian regimes. One such figure is Benito Mussolini, the fascist leader of Italy during World War II. His playbook for seizing and maintaining power included political corruption, propaganda, and suppression of dissent. Unfortunately, some of these tactics are being employed in the United States today, highlighting the need for vigilance in protecting democratic values.

Mussolini rose to power in Italy in the early 1920s, using a combination of violence and political maneuvering to establish his fascist regime. He believed in the primacy of the state over the individual, and his government heavily controlled the economy and limited personal freedoms. Mussolini was notorious for his political corruption, using his power to enrich himself and his inner circle. He also used propaganda to maintain his grip on power, controlling the media and promoting a cult of personality around himself.

During World War II, Mussolini aligned with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, leading Italy into a disastrous military campaign that led to the downfall of his government. Despite his defeat, Mussolini's legacy lives on, with some leaders today employing similar tactics to those he used to maintain power.

In the United States, there are concerns about political corruption and the erosion of democratic norms. Former President Donald Trump, for example, was accused of using his office to enrich himself and his family and was impeached twice for abuse of power. He also frequently attacked the media and promoted conspiracy theories, effectively using propaganda to maintain his base of support.

More broadly, there are concerns about the polarization of American politics, with both parties becoming increasingly entrenched in their positions and unwilling to compromise. This has led to a breakdown in civility and a rise in political violence, reminiscent of the violent clashes between fascist and anti-fascist groups in Italy during the 1920s and 1930s.

As historian Robert Paxton notes, "fascism is not an ideology or a program, but a set of tactics for acquiring and maintaining power." Some of these tactics, including political corruption and the use of propaganda, are unfortunately still effective today. It is up to citizens and leaders alike to remain vigilant and committed to democratic values, lest we find ourselves repeating the mistakes of the past.

In conclusion, the playbook of Benito Mussolini, including political corruption and the use of propaganda, is happening again in the United States. The rise of populist leaders and the erosion of democratic norms are concerning trends that must be addressed. As Mussolini himself said, "Democracy is beautiful in theory; in practice it is a fallacy." We must ensure that his legacy does not become our reality.
