Mogadishu Ring Any Bells?
Every type of crime is on the rise in the United States. It's out of control! Why? It's because we have advocated the safety and livability of our most beautiful cities to the government to keep us safe. We are all responsible for the safety and livability of where we live. Unfortunately we have isolated our law enforcement agencies from the public.
Working in isolation, the police alone cannot protect. I can't say why there is so much talk about removing our law enforcement agencies, but I can tell you this, think about a place where there are no police. Does Mogadishu ring any bells? .
In 1992, I published the first edition of the Community Watch Administration Manual to help communities establish a relationships with their local law enforcement agencies. Since then it has been used by people around the world to keep their communities safer places to live and work, allowing people to live a better life.
The principles of Community Watch date back to 1829. When Sir Robert Peel established London’s Metropolitan Police Department, he told us, “The police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.”
This is the concept behind Community Involved Policing — the only true way to insure that our communities will remain a better place to live and work — where people can enjoy a better life.
Freedom isn’t free. If your community isn’t safe for you, your children, and older folks, then it is your responsibility and privilege to make it so.
If you truly want to live and work in a better place, you have to take ownership and make a commitment to do the necessary work.
