Monday Muses ~ risks maybe/are realised!

It was a most interesting mini-conference ISRM last week. Once more the importance of meeting and speaking with people outside the normal circle of engagement was very evident. Apart from new contacts, I did learn that a vast amount of information is shared over different platforms, however not all the relevant information is either known or shared. Because of the cross-platform of information required I was able to fill in some gaps and some non-considered components, and I also gained knowledge that will at some point in time become important. I also gained 2 different "sayings"; SWAG stands for "scientific wild axxx guess" but the more important one is "Risks are realised". Given what was being presented the risks are incredibly high.

Its not possible for me to go to Canberra without going to the National Deceased Workers Memorial to stand with each of the Pillars in silence for a short time. It is hard to believe that it is all but 9 years since this most scared site was dedicated and still it has the ability to shatter my heart simply because every year far too many names are added to the deceased worker roll.

By default every member of the injured worker community by is required to accept into their lives *professional strangers; these are people who are in place for no other reason than someone has sustained a compensable workplace injury. Again by default the injured worker community are required to rely on the professional stranger to provide information and guidance and support to assist the required navigation through an alien landscape. Page 90: ... what do you do if people can't articulate what it is that they want? What if people don't know what they need?... So many of the injured worker community who came to Craig's Table simply are confused, they know something isn't going right, they have a feeling of being off-balance but are unsure as to why or what the cause of the feeling is. Others know they are a mixture of angry and frustrated. Direct quote "she would not write down what the daily living requirements were because she knew it wouldn't be approved." The person who spoke these words is very articulate, and understands all manner of issues, but was left feeling off-balance. The *professional stranger in saying that the daily living requirements would not be approved had in effect devalued a person. Even though this incident happened some time back when I spoke to the person involved the angst and confusion is still very audible. The lack of understanding from the *professional stranger extended to how to do the family shopping. On-line shopping was recommended, many of you will think that is a reasonable recommendation. However 2 key issues were not taken into consideration; the nearest supermarket didn't offer shop on line, the person was already living on a reduce income so the possible supermarket that could offer home delivery meant that the cost was prohibitive. Again the *professional stranger quite simply failed to understand the impact of such a recommendation; the daily living challenges were (and in many ways still are) very immediate, the inability of the *professional stranger to truly listen and understand just compounded the feelings of devalued. The providers to the injured worker community including Craig's Table holds a Duty of Care that must be paramount at every stage. I was more than happy to pass onto this particular person a link to Craig's Table ToolBox and the framework from the Australian Human Rights Commission so the need to repeat and regurgitate the same information to different *professional strangers is no longer as injurious as it has been.

This morning morning Craig's Table was notified that Safety Governance Foundation Ltd has been registered. The importance of this is that Craig's Table is a part of this very important network.

Again (and mayhaps especially after standing at the National Deceased Workers Memorial) I ask that if it is at all possible for you to attend Christopher's Memorial Dinner that you do attend. The work that Touched by Christopher is doing is so very important to protect and support other families who suffer the loss of a loved one due to a workplace fatality.

Time to head into the kitchen for a cup of tea and to prepare dinner, a quick look outside tells me that the forecasted evening storm is gathering, best I make sure that the candles are also set in place in case the power goes out again.

The neglect by politicians and bureaucrats costs lives. Through neglect and cost cutting measures in health and age care for example, we have seen too many lives lost. The travesties are right across many sectors, never to be reported by the media.
