In it for the money!
I often ask my prospective clients why they are in business, what’s it all for? And I’ve lost count of the number of times that the response is “For the money, of course!”
“OK, that’s great” I say “… and what does the money get you?”
And that’s when we get to the truth of why they are in business. For many, it’s about supporting their family, keeping them safe and happy, giving them a comfortable life. For others, it’s about pursuing a hobby or other interest, creating the lifestyle they desire, fulfilling their soul’s potential. And for yet others, it’s about making a contribution, changing the world, leaving a legacy. Actually, when you dig deep enough, most people have an ultimate goal to make a contribution, create a legacy, leave the world a better place.
My friend and fellow conscious coach Stuart Kerslake sums up these three ‘levels’ very neatly: “Feed the Family, Feed the Soul, Feed the World!”
And here’s the challenge: it’s a progression. It’s probably a little self-indulgent to just feed your soul at the expense of feeding your family. And it’s not really sustainable to feed the world if you aren’t also feeding your soul – and definitely not if you can’t even feed your own family!
Which is why I’m always pleased to hear clients say that they’re in it for the money – my programmes all blend passion and pragmatism, spending time on all three levels of fulfilment – material, personal and spiritual. And what that all means is that as well as creating a wonderful life for their family, my clients also get to be around long enough to uncover their true genius, and to create their unique legacy for the world.
Which level are you focusing on right now?
