Early Rises, Late Nights: How Do You Balance It All?

Ever found yourself dragging out of bed at 3 a.m. for a meeting after a long night? It's not something that gets easier, but sometimes, it’s just what’s needed to make an impact.

As you can tell from the picture, I was in Cleveland, Ohio, navigating this exact scenario.

Imagine this: I’m at my cousin’s wedding rehearsal, part of the groom's party, enjoying the evening with family. But in the back of my mind, I know the alarm is set for an ungodly hour.

Fast forward a few hours—I’m up before the crack of dawn, heading to a live broadcast to share my thoughts on what should be top of mind in the upcoming elections, particularly on economic issues and initiatives that need to be addressed. It’s 4 a.m., and I’m on the air, feeling the weight of both the night before and the day ahead.

This kind of juggling act isn’t new, but it never gets easier. Over the years, I’ve learned a 𝒇𝒆𝒘 𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒔 to make these moments a bit smoother:

𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅: When you’ve got a day like this coming up, preparation is everything. Lay out your clothes, notes, and breakfast the night before. It might sound simple, but it takes the edge off those early mornings and sets you up for success.
𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐩: A 20-minute nap might not replace a full night’s sleep, but it can give you the burst of energy you need to keep pushing forward. It’s a lifesaver when you’re burning the candle at both ends.
𝑭𝒖𝒆𝒍 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚: Long days and short nights can wear you down. Hydration and nutrition aren’t just buzzwords—they’re your best defense against burnout. Keep your energy steady with water and balanced meals, and you’ll be amazed at the difference.
𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆: Whether it’s carving out a quiet corner or negotiating for a conference room with good lighting, having a dedicated space makes all the difference in your focus and performance. A big shout out to the Hilton team for stepping up and helping me secure a conference space with the best lighting just when I needed it most!

After the broadcast, it was straight into wedding day obligations. And as much as I love my work, let me tell you, I was more than ready to unwind once the party kicked off.

I recently had the chance to ask Jane Lauder, Executive Vice President and Chief Data Officer of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., exactly that. When I asked her for career advice for aspiring leaders, her answer was both simple and powerful: "𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠."

Jane shared a nugget of wisdom from her mentor that really stuck with me: 𝐃𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. Whether it’s exploring industries outside your own or connecting with new people, this isn’t just about collecting knowledge—it’s about staying ahead in a world that’s always changing and driving meaningful transformation within your company.

Her words really hit home for me. Today’s leaders need more than just experience; they need to constantly adapt, grow, and keep their curiosity alive.

Innovation Unearthed: Lessons from a Sunken Steamboat

Ever thought about what a sunken steamboat from the 1800s could teach us about innovation?

I recently visited the Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City, and wow—it’s a place where history and innovation come together in such a powerful way. Over 150 years ago, the steamboat Arabia sank, but that wasn’t the end of its story. Decades later, a team of explorers uncovered its treasures, proving that sometimes, innovation is about digging deep—literally and figuratively.

Here’s what stood out to me:

1️⃣ 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 – Sometimes, moving forward means looking back. What have we missed that could lead to the next big thing? It’s amazing how forgotten stories can spark fresh ideas.
2️⃣ 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟 – Whether it’s recovering a lost steamboat or pushing through challenges in business, sticking with it makes all the difference. The journey might be tough, but the payoff? Totally worth it.
3️⃣ 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 – Innovation isn’t just shiny new gadgets. It’s people coming together with a shared vision, making something extraordinary happen. Collaboration is where the magic really happens.

What’s a small gesture that recently made a big difference in your day?

During my recent visit to the Empire State Building Observatory, I met Renita, one of the amazing staff members who truly made the experience unforgettable. Her energy and passion were contagious. Not only did she show me the best views, but she also insisted on taking the perfect shot herself. Let’s just say her photo skills put mine to shame! Of course, I had to grab a selfie with the famous Renita to capture the moment.

This whole experience left me with a few thoughts:

1️⃣ Small Gestures, Big Impact: A simple smile or kind word can completely change someone’s day. It’s a reminder that positivity can create powerful memories.
2️⃣ Expertise Amplifies Joy: When you know your stuff, it shows. Sharing what you know doesn’t just make your work better—it makes everyone around you feel the difference too.
3️⃣ Positivity is Contagious: Joy and enthusiasm have a way of spreading. Be that source of light for someone else, and you’ll see it come back to you.

Greetings Ryan, So many great nuggets in here. First, I am glad that you have a strategy for those early alarms. Rest is so important. I had a boss who traveled so much he contracted Epstein’s Bar Disease (adult mono in essence). Basically, burning the candle at both ends. He was out for 6 months. So, keep taking those power naps when needed. Second, love the positivity section. I have worked for people who took pride in “your thank you is in your paycheck”. I prefer to thank people for a job well done. A smile. I quick chat. Get people laughing or smiling at the workplace. Imagine that. A fun AND productive work environment. Cheers. (Been up since 3:15 without the alarm). That’s life. Jim

Thank you for sharing this. we do require FL across the glob. even well educated people lack it and my opinion bcz we dont teach about finance from school.
