Designing for net-zero carbon

What is a truly holistic approach to designing for net-zero carbon? Gencay Tatlidamak, our sustainability and physics lead in Europe, discusses the need to develop a holistic approach to designing new projects.

Designing a sustainable hospital fit for an uncertain future

As part of an international design team with architect OMA, Buro Happold recently explored a range of challenges hospitals will have to consider to deliver high quality healthcare environments in the future.

This article, one of four produced ahead of a white paper for the Hospital of the Future project, explores key concepts for designing a sustainable hospital such as using renewable energy sources, tackling water demands and developing resilient supply chains.

Learn about the prospect of a sustainable framework for hospitals.

Van Leesten Memorial Bridge

In our latest project video story, structural engineer and principal in our Boston office, Paul Richardson, showcases the award-winning Van Leesten Memorial Bridge in Providence, RI, USA.

Paul explains the design choices for a bridge that is more than a simple walkway, but a symbol of Providence's renewal and a site that has become a destination in its own right.

Creating a trade hub on the new silk road

Anaklia Port is found on the Black Sea coast, providing a trade route into Georgia and Central Asia.

We were commissioned to examine the obstacles that must be overcome to develop a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) that will set up a role for the city on the “new silk road”.

Roman Baths hot spring water heat recovery system

The English city of Bath is where Buro Happold began, and we are always delighted to continue to support the area.

The Roman Baths have been a draw for visitors for thousands of years. There are now ambitious targets to achieve net zero carbon across the estate by 2030. We were engaged to design a system for recovering heat from the hot springs. Learn more about our role.
