This month at Buro Happold – May 2024
Welcome to the Buro Happold newsletter. In this month's issue, we look at highlights from last month, including community initiative Bridges to Prosperity, the new Joint Research Centre in Seville and our expanding advisory service.
Building bridges of opportunity
Upholding a long-standing tradition, Buro Happold partnered with international charity organisation Bridges to Prosperity to build a 62-metre-long suspension bridge for the Cyamatare village in western Rwanda.
Volunteers from Buro Happold worked on-site with the local community and Bridges to Prosperity staff, creating a lifeline for approximately 9,000 people. The finished Cyamatare Bridge now provides safe access to critical infrastructure, amenities, services and opportunities all year round.
Business advisory with engineering at its core
As our advisory service continues to expand, we talked to global discipline director Philip Rice to learn what makes the Buro Happold advisory offering different from that of a management consultancy firm, and our approach:
“Our advisory service is founded and grounded in science and engineering because those things hold the answer to some of the most challenging questions our clients face.”
Identifying those most at risk from climate change
With the County of Los Angeles Climate Vulnerability Assessment (CVA), Buro Happold led a team to proactively identify the people, places and systems most vulnerable to escalating climate change impacts.
We were thought partners with the County of LA in creating a new approach to assessing vulnerability, keeping social equity as a focus throughout.

India leadership gathering in Lonavala
Fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation is vital to delivering exceptional projects for our clients around the world.
As part of our continuous learning and development programme, members of our India leadership team gathered in picturesque Lonavala in Western Maharashtra to foster innovation and strengthen connections.
Climate control in museums
Buro Happold partner Roger Chang recently spoke on 'Making the Museum' podcast to discuss climate control in museums.
In the episode, Roger uses his two decades of building engineering experience to explain the 70/50 golden standard, artefact loan agreements and how museums can keep sustainability simple.
A shining showcase of sustainability
The new Joint Research Centre in Seville, CUPULA SOLAR, is establishing a new benchmark for workspaces that empower knowledge sharing, collaboration and co-creation.
Buro Happold was engaged to deliver expert consultancy for concept design around structural engineering, sustainability, building services engineering (MEP), acoustics and facade engineering.
