A month at TalkTalk

As the end of my 4th week at TalkTalk quickly creeps up on me, I can’t help feeling that the time has absolutely flown by yet at the same time feel like I’ve been here for much much longer!

It’s always a bit of punt joining a new business. You can do as much research as you like, you can often be sold the dream via careers sites and in your interview and interactions, but until you’ve actually started, you’re never going to know what it’s really like to work there.

It’s a bit like when you order a new shirt online, it looks great in the pictures and has top reviews. It comes, you try it on and realise that your now dad bod and a slim fit shirt just aren’t a good match.

Sure, it looked it great online, but as you stand there in front of the mirror, breathing in and buttons about to burst off you know that this isn’t what you thought you were signing up for.

Returning a shirt that is never going to be a good fit is much more straight forward than realising you’ve joined a company that isn’t a good fit. I can relate massively to the dad bod and shirt scenario, but luckily I’ve found myself in a business that is a brilliant fit.

So, I’ve been here almost 4 weeks and whilst I’ve experienced and learned a lot about the business so far, I’m sure I’ll uncover a lot more over the coming months. But if I had to sum up my experience here so far in one word it would be awesome. Here’s why…

Freedom

I’ve never known freedom like it. Yes, I’ve always had large amounts of freedom in previous roles, but here is just another level.

I have goals I need to hit, goals I was involved in shaping. How I go about hitting those goals is completely on me.

I’m free to explore & experiment, support is there if I need it, but I’m free to figure out the best way to achieve my goals. I love that!

Flexibility

Having the freedom in how you go about your work is one thing, but it can be somewhat limited if you don’t have any freedom in where and when you do that work.

Sometimes you’ll need a few hours of uninterrupted time to really get through some work, sometimes it might just be to think! It’s hard to get that sort of time in an office. When I need that time, I’ll just organise my diary so I can work from home.

There’ll be days when I’ll need input from others, so I’ll be in the office. But there’s also the personal benefits of flexible working, as most parents will know there is nothing worse than rushing out of the office to make sure you get to nursery before it closes and hitting traffic. I just don’t have that problem here.

I’m trusted to manage my diary, when and where I work. Work is something you do, not a place you go to. I’m measured on my outputs, not how much time I spend in the office.

Presenteeism just doesn’t exist here.

Internal Mobility

It’s big here, really big. In fact, around 40% of all roles are filled by internal applicants. There are opportunities everywhere, whether that’s within your own function or elsewhere in the business.

You’ll be supported with your self-development to achieve your own personal career goals. I’ve spoken to people who are on their fifth or sixth role in the business, in quite short space of time.

I know that here I’ll be fully supported to develop my career in a way that works for me.

People

A business is only as good as it’s people, right?

As the newbie you can often feel like a pain constantly asking questions of people or for help. Not here, everybody has been awesome in helping me find my feet and we’ve had a laugh too.

But the big thing here that has really struck me is that everybody is encouraged to just be themselves. That means no politics, no hierarchy and no game playing that can often be found in larger corporates. It just doesn’t happen here, and if it does then it must be on a very very small scale because I’ve seen no indication of it all.

The other big thing on the people element is our diversity & inclusion agenda. Yes, there are a million business reasons to take D&I seriously, but we’re doing it because it’s the right thing to do.

Imagine working for a business who does things just because it’s the right thing to do. A business with a conscience, a business that is fully inclusive and where everybody can bring their full self to their work.

The Negatives

Honestly I’m struggling to think of any right now, no business is perfect and I’m sure I’ll uncover some things that aren’t so amazing as time goes by, but I’m pretty confident that all the great things here will massively outweigh any bad.

If I had to be really picky and pull out one negative so far, probably parking (sorry Jane 😊 ). Parking is limited, but there is an overflow carpark about half a mile away.

Reality is though it’s not that bad, when the weather is as nice as it has been it’s quite a pleasant walk, however I’m sure I’ll change my tune when I have to walk it during a torrential downpour. But I really am nitpicking here.

The recruiter in me can’t resist this next part…  we have hundreds of roles available in Salford as we relocate our London operations to the North West.

So whether you’re in Marketing, UX, Software Development, Solution Architecture (plus many more!) take a look at our careers page and join us on our journey to becoming the number 1 recommended provider and work in an environment where you can always be yourself, work flexibly, innovate and develop your career.

Thanks Lee, to negate the comment on parking, remember that the Soapworks is just a few minutes walk from the tram, every 6 mins on average to/from Manchester City Centre and also every 12 minutes to the park-and-ride at Ladywell.
