A monthly sharing of a selection of the stuff that lights me up and inspires me to do what I do. Enjoy!

I'm late!  October Sharing Stuff in November!

When I say 'it's not my fault', I really do mean it!

I was all set to press the send button on the morning of Thursday 31 October and sat down at my desk and bang - no internet!  And that has been the case for the past 5 days.

Challenging?  Yes.  Trying to run a business that depends on it.

Timely?  Perhaps.

You see, the irony of some of the stuff I am sharing this month isn't lost on me.

It's about rest, relaxation, recharging.

I haven't been listening to what my body has been telling me and the universe (or rather the rats that ate the BT cables!) stepped in to make me take a pause.

And for those of you that have been receiving my Sharing Stuff for some time will probably notice that I still haven't got back into my usual rhythm.

But maybe my Sharing Stuff becomes just that - no need to worry about structure and rhythm; just a collection of things that I want to share with you all.

So here goes ... Sharing Stuff That Lights Me Up!

I am going to start with a quote because it's going to set the theme for this month's Sharing Stuff...

Sometimes the best solution is to rest, relax and recharge. It's hard to be your best on empty.

After a rollercoaster of a summer, and not a ride that I chose to get aboard, I have been purposefully trying to find some way of getting quality rest and relaxation.

Resting is not something I do well.

Relaxing only tends to come when I have been productive (the lack of internet for 5 days certainly challenged my productivity at work!)

When people say to me, ‘I’m going to have the weekend at home just chilling out’, I am in total awe and wonder how on earth I could do that!

It’s not that I don’t have the perfect space to chill; I just find it near on impossible! I like to ‘do’ stuff, anything really.

So let me introduce you to Valerie, our new campervan / motorhome (I still don’t know which and am not really bothered!) because to us, she’s Valerie.

Ps, I couldn't resist sharing this lovely pic of Nell enjoying her first trip in Valerie!

Valerie parked up on our 2nd adventure - picture perfect!

Nell admiring the view on our first adventure - and making some pony friends!

Paul setting up camp for a relaxing sundowner!

And the most important thing to me about Valerie is that she is that elusive R&R.

A chance to get away from it all, not very far, and just be, instead of do.

Yes, there will be some ‘doing’ – walking for the most part, exploring our wonderful countryside and coastline.

But when we get back to ‘camp’, then there is no ‘doing’ to be done – so it’s the perfect opportunity to just ‘be’.

We’ve had two adventures so far – the first one a towering success, the second one, not quite as successful (foxes barking in the night, no electric and no dogs allowed on our planned reservoir walk) but I’m persevering.

I’m going to get this R&R thing licked!

I saw a couple of posts on Instagram that caught my attention – which add to what this is all about.

I love the idea of glimmers instead of triggers.

And that we can train ourselves to have glimmers.

I have tried to capture the essence about glimmers below but if you want to know more, check out the.holistic.psychologist on Instagram.

Glimmers

What happens when we experience a glimmer...

How can we experience more glimmers...

And what about that elusive rest that I'm looking for?

Nicola Jane Hobbs shared on Instagram the idea of breaking rest down into different types of rest which really appeals to me.

It doesn’t feel like such a big thing for me to achieve, if I can break it into chunks; just like any other goal really.

I can see how these types of rest suit me.  I thought I needed to nap on the sofa; or just do nothing - neither of which I have mastered as yet!

So knowing that I am able to do some of these different kinds of rest actually makes me feel more restful about it!

What is rest?

The different types of rest

So what about books, and podcasts that have inspired me this month?  Isn't that what my Sharing Stuff is all about?

Well, yes, but as I said, my structure and rhythm are a bit haywire at the moment.

That said, there are a couple of books I'd love to share with you...

Emotional Intelligence 2.0

Did you know:

  • People with Emotional Intelligence flourish, and they succeed more?

  • That there are 4 skills that make up our Emotional Intelligence?

This book is a must for anyone who wants to improve their emotional intelligence, or indeed find out more about it.

I thought I understood what Emotional Intelligence was until I read this book.

It is my type of book.  Broken down into small manageable chunks.

Simply explained, with some strategies shared that we can all work on.

I've done a couple posts on LinkedIn sharing some of my learnings from the book so why not check them out here , here and here...

You are not your ADHD

I bought this book because I know Lou, the author.

I’ve only met her a handful of times through a virtual network and felt instantly inspired by what she shared with the group. Always insightful, always thoughtful, always kind.

And then wham, out of nowhere, she published a book!

One of the best bits when reading Lou’s book is that I can actually hear her speaking the words on the page. I've only known a couple of authors and this gets me everytime.

This book is ultimately written for women with ADHD but it's more than that.  It's a personal deep dive into Lou's life, her experiences, her challenges, her learnings.  She is so open and honest, and at times amusing, about what has been an exceptionally difficult journey to navigate.

And she's nowhere near done.  She's still learning.  She's still hacking her own ADHD brain so she can work with it.

As you may know, I coach many neurodiverse clients, many of whom are ADHDers too. And there's so much learning from Lou’s book that means I can better support my clients, so they can hack their brains and make them work better for them too.

One thing that sticks with me throughout is ‘Pills don’t teach you skills’.  This resonates because coaching teaches skills.

I work with my clients so they can develop the skills to help themselves.  So they aren't dependent on me for support.  They effectively learn to coach themselves.

When we do stuff for people, or prescribe pills, so to speak, people don't grow, develop new skills; they remain stuck, dependent.

You don't have to be a woman to read this book.

You don't have to be an ADHDer to read this book.

You don't have to be a coach to read this book.

Just read this book.  You'll get so much from it.  And you'll love Lou too!

Do you know what your values are?

The things that are really important to you?

Values are one of the 3 main pillars of coaching (the other two are goals and beliefs). They are the things we must have in our life to feel fulfilled. And often people will be drawn to coaching if there is something missing from their life, if they are not feeling fulfilled.

I'm working with a client such as this and it prompted me to revisit a couple of podcasts about values.  Again, so I can better support them in discovering what are their values, now, at this time in their life and career because they do change, as we change.

If you, like my client, want to find out more about your values, what you need in your life to feel fully fulfilled, then do get in touch; I'd love to chat to you about it.

In the meantime, here are a few podcast shares to get you started...

World of Work talking to Jeff Weigh – Personal values and happiness at Work

Living in alignment with our personal values

And that's all for this month.  And as it's already November, I better get inspired as to what to share later this month!

So, until my next share...

Best wishes and stay shining
