(more than) 10 Random Acts of Kindness You Can Do Today

According to the Dictionary of Cambridge, kindness is the quality of being generous, helpful, and caring about others. But here’s the exciting thing… Research has proven that, even though complex, kindness can be an inherent personality trait among humans.

Essentially, this means that we can all feel and display kindness. But the way we decide to show it or receive it varies from person to person. Since it’s so different, “why should I put so much effort into it?” you may ask. And the answer, dear reader, is the following 👇.

Benefits of being kind daily (with yourself and others)

When we are kind, we are changing the world in a micro and a macro way simultaneously. It’s not really magic but rather science.

According to the ‘The World Happiness Report’ by the United Nations , happiness and life satisfaction are facilitated by factors such as trust and social support, which are themselves manifestations of kindness. While on a more individual level, studies have found that acts of kindness are linked to increased feelings of well-being.

Being kind supports our networks at work and in our personal lives and encourages us to be more active. The combination of both is a powerful tool to improve our self-esteem. And on top of that, it makes us more grateful and like we belong to our community.

Now that this is clear, here are (more than) 10 random ways to be kind to someone today or from Monday 🙌. Which one of them will you try?

Tell your colleagues that they are doing a great job

Positive feedback encourages us to do better. Try complimenting how they handled a situation, the quality of their work, or how much you have seen them grow. Celebrate their work anniversary, and tell them what you appreciate about sharing the workplace with them.

Thank someone

You don’t even have to do it verbally. Simply recognizing what they did for you is enough. You can thank people for doing you a favor, for saying something nice to you one day, and for their presence in your life. Also, if they shared something with you today, for their trust and patience, for the path you have shared together.

Give the new person a warm welcome

Make that first week easier for them! Introduce yourself, welcome them, give them a tour, tell them to sit with you at lunch, invite them to after-work gatherings, and check in on them once in a while.

Clean the common space of the office

The space we work in affects our mood, self-confidence, and productivity. You can be kind to your team by keeping your desk organised, picking up something that fell on the floor, arranging a room, saying on time that supplies are needed, and so on.

Give out free coffee to your team

Snacks, tea, and coffee are welcome because they give us energy and a short break. You can share homemade cupcakes with your coworkers, bring beverages for lunch, give away candy in the afternoon, share recipes that make you happy, offer something your family cooked for you, etc.

Make a playlist for someone

Music influences our mood so heavily! You can make different playlists for different times (lack of energy, extreme focus, motivation search, Fridays, etc.) and share them with your team. Something that works for us is making collaborative playlists ;)

Helping out with family issues

Families are not simple. But if you have a relationship with yours, there are simple and easy ways you can be kind to them. A good morning message, making someone home cooked dinner, helping out in the house, taking care of children for a few hours, doing the dishes, walking the dog, checking in on the elders, etc.
