" I am Henry Cooke, a senior business consultant for RW search in the Orthopedic and Spine space, and this is Morethopedics volume 2."
OSTEOPOROSIS AWARENESS AND PREVENTION MONTH:
An estimated 200 million people globally are suffering with Osteoporosis, the skeletal disorder, which is characterised by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue. It mostly affects elderly individuals and symptoms include bone fragility and consequent increase in fracture risk*.
Due to the disease's global significance, organisations such as BHOF and ASBMR have declared the month of May, Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention month. An opportunity to commemorate the disorder by providing education and awareness about the disease, providing bone healthy exercises and information – for all ages – to help achieve better bone health*.
Numerus charities, news outlets, medical professionals, orthopadic surgeries, and tech companies have collaborated this month, to provide free information and insight into the condition, which will hopefully help millions of people globally.
Its truly great to see the medical sector working together in this way to fight this debilitating condition!

Q1 RESULTS:
NEW TECH:
Medacta-Successful AR assisted Lumbar Fusion:
Medacta's NextAR Glasses were used for the first time in the US for a lumbar fusion procedure.
The lumbar fusion procedure took place at the Center for Pain and Spine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, New Hampshire, it was performed by Kevin J. McGuire, M.D., M.S. The surgeon utilised Medacta’s M.U.S.T. Pedicle Screw System in combination with the NextAR Spine AR-based surgical application
The NextAR Spine Application assists the surgeon in precisely locating the anatomical structures in either open, mini-open or percutaneous spine procedures for the safe placement of spine implants. The system tracks the patient's anatomy, continuously updating its position on patient-specific 3D x-ray images, such as 3D C-Arm or 3D CT scan.
NextAR offers personalized augmented reality solutions for both joint replacement and spine procedures.
"While utilizing the 3D Direct option, I was able to seamlessly register the NextAR Platform to my intraoperative 3D scan, accurately place the pedicle screws, and enjoy the ability to keep my eyes on my patient the entire time using the NextAR Smart Glasses. Implementing the NextAR Platform didn't compromise any of my current workflow and actually, worked better than I anticipated," says Kevin J. McGuire, M.D., M.S.(15)
Zimmer' Omni Suite AI debut:
Zimmer has debuted some AI Tech called Omni Suite, described as an intelligent operating room (OR) that is designed to optimize surgical workflow and procedural efficiency by automating manual tasks and streamlining unnecessary technology and redundant hardware.
The new AI feature uses cameras to automatically recognize and timestamp key OR workflow milestones, including patient entry and exit, door count, the start and stop of anesthesia, surgery and cleaning. Surgical teams are guided through a process to help optimize OR workflow based on real-time access to workflow metrics. This will no doubt benefit patient and Surgeon by reducing time in the OR (16).
Seaspine's Spinal Solutions:
Seaspine has commercially launched the Reef TA (TLIF Articulating) Interbody System, which is designed to reliably deliver an interbody to the anterior portion of the disc space to optimize sagittal alignment and endplate support.
With an array of footprint and lordotic options to choose from, surgeons have the ability to intraoperatively address specific anatomical needs.

“Reef TA is an exciting addition to our interbody portfolio,” stated Dennis Cirino, Senior Vice President, Global Spinal Systems. “This system combined with a comprehensive set of decompression and disc preparation instruments, provides a versatile and reproducible lumbar (17).
Exactech X Joint Medica Limited:
Exactech has been granted an FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for JointMedica’s Polymotion® Hip Resurfacing System. Exactech is a minority shareholder of JointMedica Limited and has been collaborating with the United Kingdom-based orthopaedic device designer and manufacturer to deliver the next generation of hip resurfacing to the global market, which it holds exclusive global distribution rights to the product.
Hip resurfacing is usually a preferred alternative to total hip replacement and according to Craig J. Della Valle, MD, of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago, Illinois: “remains an excellent choice for young, active patients, who will inevitably place a higher demand on their hip reconstruction. The introduction of metal-on-vitamin E crosslinked polyethylene hip resurfacing would be most welcomed by me as a practicing surgeon and well-received by my patient community.”(18).
FINAL THOUGHTS:
ENOVIS does the double:
Since DJO’s parent company Colfax, changed its name to ENOVIS in April, with the plan for DJO to eventually adopt the name permanently; ENOVIS have been working hard to expand their portfolio. On may 9th, the company announced that they have acquired Australian orthopaedic company, 360 Med Care Pty Ltd, who are a 10 year old, 100+ employee company who specialise in joint replacement surgery technologies (19).
On the 24th May, ENOVIS announced their second acquisition of the month; DJO, has acquired the assets of Outcome-Based Technologies, LLC. The move builds upon the DJO® (now part of Enovis) legacy of bracing innovation, and specifically in the fast-growing hip bracing category.
“The acquisition of the EXCYABIR™ hip brace and the CryoKnee™ knee brace provides innovative bracing solutions to healthcare providers and patients alike,” said Jason Anderson, President Bracing and Supports. “We are pleased to welcome EXCYABIR and CryoKnee to the DonJoy® brand. We are confident these products will help grow our bracing business.”
“The flagship EXCYABIR hip brace is an innovative, modular hip brace with capability to integrate cold therapy,” said Don LoGuercio, President, Outcome-Based Technologies. “There are about 200,000 hip arthroscopies done every year in the US, and we believe EXCYABIR hip braces offer a unique solution. We are thrilled that Enovis will help bring this technology to more providers and their patients.” (20).
With excellent Q1 figures, and these two intriguing acquisitions, the future is looking bright for Enovis, and I’m excited to see which direction the company goes in.
