Mornings Separate the Good From the Great

Mornings Separate the Good From the Great

Did you know that the greatest golfer of all time Jack Nicholaus had a pre-shot ritual that never varied from the first tee to the 18th hole. Yup, they measured it and the maximum variation was by just one second. A series of small actions repeated again and again and again gave him the consistency to win 18 Majors.

In contrast Greg Norman who led the field in the 1996 Masters and then lost that lead in a massive upset was shown to have huge variation between his pre-shot rituals in that final downfall.

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit." Aristotle

Time and time again, if you study the greats you see they keep certain rituals strong and steady every .....single.... day.  After working with hundreds of achievers I have seen that the most important ritual you need to have as a daily habit is your Morning Ritual.

How you begin will determine how you are in the middle and how you finish. Every one of your days in just like a growing baby. Small changes to the early embryo cause massive changes later on which would require much greater effort to change later in a baby's development.  Begin with a powerful ritual and you will set up the DNA for an outstanding day.

So, what sort of things make an incredible morning ritual? Here's a list of items that I have found have made all the difference for myself and others. They are borrowed from a host of examples of world class, highly effective people and have been personally tested and proven to be life changing.

1. Rehydrate - Your body is desperate for water when you wake up and depriving it even for an hour will vastly effect your energy levels for the day.

2. Have Some Fruit - Research has shown that a burst of sugar in your first hour greatly improves your intelligence levels in the day.

3. Exercise - Even for a few minutes doing some jumping jacks to 'Eye of the Tiger' each morning will change your state and cause you to start the day in a higher gear while others are only creeping through the morning.

4. Gratitudes - Research has shown that by taking some time to appreciate even a few things each morning you increase your happiness levels. Happier people are 31% more productive.

5. Swallow That Frog - Spend 30-90 minutes tackling your toughest most game changing activity first thing in the morning. Whether you are a lark or a night owl getting something that you can be proud of e.g. creative/high leverage early on in the day will give you tremendous confidence and joy. This will in turn affect everything else you do as you will feel like an achiever.... and you are.
