The Most Important Thing For Hispanic Heritage Month We Can Do is to Recognize Our Own Power
Nothing is more important for Latinos today than Fundraising. Note I put a capital “F” on fundraising.
What a weird thing to say right? Let me explain. This month, you will see countless articles about Latino and Hispanic pride and power. You will see many posts and nice speeches about our economic power in the US today. It's all great and needed.
But what is urgently needed is fundraising. Harnessing the economic power of Latinos in the US today. Fundraising turns that economic power into good. Powering the organizations that help our communities and defend our rights. I estimate that Latinos have an annual giving ability of 24.7 billion dollars. That’s with a “B”. This aligns with Latinos being a 3.6 trillion dollar economy in the US today.
Powering the nonprofits that help our communities has never been more urgent. We have never faced more hate, misinformation, and need in this country. Racism against Latinos is becoming more and more normalized in our public life.
We can talk about Latino power in the US. We can have nice speeches and PR. But fundraising and giving is actualizing Latino power. Money is power. Imagine the nonprofits you support. Latinx nonprofits that fund scholarships, defend our rights, support our immigrants, fight for public health, and more. Imagine those organizations with budgets, and staffs two, or three times their current size. Imagine the tremendous good they could do.

We are hardworking people; we do a lot with little. But if we do not marshal our power, focus it and direct it. Well, then we can post all the articles and speeches about the contributions of Latinos in the US today. It will not matter when there are tens of millions of Americans who don’t think our children deserve opportunities, who don’t think we should be voting, and who are happy to deny our women control over their bodies. Trying to educate people about the Latino contribution is nice. But asserting the rights we deserve and the opportunities we have worked hard for is better.
When Latinos thrive, whole communities thrive. So for Hispanic Heritage Month this year, posting nice graphics and statements are nice but lets DO SOMETHING. Give.
Give to your local Latinx-focused nonprofit. Organizations you know, organizations that have helped your familia, your community. Please shout out the organizations you know and support in the comments section.
