Motivating Others: A Guide for Leaders

Motivating Others: A Guide for Leaders

By John Gronski

When I speak to junior leaders someone usually poses the following question: How do I motivate those I lead?

When I ask groups of leaders about some of their biggest challenges, motivating others is always on the list.

Leaders must have the ability to motivate their team.  Reflecting on my own leadership journey, three key principles stand out.

1.     Start with a purpose and a vision. Leaders must articulate a compelling vision and purpose to their team. When team members understand that their work serves a greater purpose beyond themselves, they are more likely to be motivated to excel.

A clear vision provides the team with direction and a goal to strive towards. The vision should be a simple, unique, ideal, image of the future. The vision should be simple enough for everyone in the organization to understand regardless of education or experience. Your vision should be unique to your organization, present what success looks like, paint a picture in the minds of your team, and be future-oriented.

2.     Lead by example. One of the most powerful ways to motivate others is to lead by demonstrating the same level of commitment, dedication, and standards that you expect from your team. By sharing the workload and displaying the behavior you expect, you inspire others to follow suit.

3.     Celebrate success. Recognizing and celebrating achievements, no matter how small, is crucial for boosting morale and maintaining momentum. Acknowledge and praise both individual and team accomplishments, reinforcing the behaviors and outcomes you wish to see more of. By highlighting the progress made towards the shared vision, you keep the team motivated and engaged.

In my experience in the Army, effective leadership involves influencing followers providing purpose, direction, and motivation to achieve the mission and improve the organization. This approach has proven successful for me in challenging times and can be applied by leaders in any context.

Whether dealing with young people entering the workforce or seasoned individuals, research shows that strategies such as open communication, collaboration, inclusivity, trust, and a sense of purpose resonate with all generations.

By instilling a sense of purpose and vision, leading by example, and celebrating even the smallest victories, leaders can inspire and motivate their team members, fostering a positive and productive work environment for everyone.

How do you motivate the people you lead?
