Motivation; the fuel which drives companies to efficiency!

Motivation; the fuel which drives companies to efficiency!

The term motivation is derived from the Latin word movers, meaning “to move.”

Motivation can be defined as the driving force behind our actions, fuelled by our desire for something. It is that internal strength that gets us to move, and give 100% to whatever goal or end we desire or plan to achieve. From a manager’s point of view motivation is the process to energize, direct and sustain your subordinates’ efforts to attain the goals.

Physiologically we can talk about two types of employees who need to be continuously motivated and self-motivated ones. Comparatively it’s easier to deal with self-motivated people as goals/achievements are the basic Motivators for them. As soon as the goal is achieved he would be no longer interested in work. Therefore, it is very essential for the managemer to know his goal to push him to work.

The ability to do work and willingness to do work both affect the efficiency of a person. Since people are being recruited according to their abilities, focusing on willingness part is more important.  For example, a person is highly educated and he is recruited on this very basic. But it is not essential that he will do outstanding work. He shall have to be motivated to do good work.

Besides the contribution to efficiency improvement, effective motivation also;

  • Helps to Change Negative or Indifferent Attitudes of Employees
  • Supports reducing Employee Turnover
  • Helps to Reduce Absenteeism in the Organization
  • Breaks Resistance to Change

Knowing how to motivate employees means understanding the basics of motivation. However, people can be motivated by different things and motivation is essentially a complex and often personal issue.

For some, external factors are important, such as wealth, perks, status and position. For others, motivation is more about intrinsic factors, such as feeling satisfied, enjoying a sense of challenge, feeling valued, or realizing their potential. It’s worth remembering that employees may well be motivated by a combination of both kinds of motivation.

There are different and various motivate applications in the world such as; adopting  gaming techniques (deploying reward and competitive tactics commonly found in the gaming world to make tasks such as management training, data entry and brainstorming seem less like work), more empowerment, giving a break on company time (late start, early leave, competitions), moving the office outdoor, treating employees like partners, simply allowing them to do job, instilling team spirit, treating them with respect, celebrating success…

Making it short, we can name the combination of above in 4 words;

Work environment, appreciation, recognition and involvement.

What is your biggest motivation in the business life?
