Movement is Life Newsletter - May 2024

A welcome from Dr William Bird

Hello,

Daylight hours are longer and Spring is here. We’ve been busy at Intelligent Health HQ, launching and delivering Beat the Street games in Trafford, Falkirk West, South Ayrshire, Chelmsford, Ipswich, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harwich & Dovercourt and Active Nation, which was played across the west coast of Scotland. In total, these games had almost 75,000 players!

There’s lots of behind the scenes work going on in planning future campaigns, particularly looking to the health benefits of being connected to nature. Keep a look out for our communications regarding this over the Summer.

Please do get in touch with our team if you would like to contribute to the content of our newsletter in any way. We also really appreciate your feedback!

Best Wishes,

William and the Intelligent Health team

Beat the Street Scotland Highlights

Following Beat the Street, the travel habits of both adults and children showed a positive shift towards more sustainable and active forms of transportation. Car use for trips, including commuting to work and school, dropped noticeably, while walking for work, leisure, and fun saw a considerable uptick.

Adults were more inclined to incorporate walking into their daily routines, with a notable increase in those engaging in short walking trips every day and a decrease in those walking less frequently. Similarly, children embraced walking both for commuting to school and for leisure, with fewer being driven.

Even cycling, though starting from a low base, witnessed growth among participants. This collective move towards more active travel not only reflects a successful behavioural change post Beat the Street, but also points towards a healthier, more environmentally conscious community.

Beat the Street can provide a range of insights, from resilience levels, to mental wellbeing and greenspaces to name but a few. Want to learn more about what insights are possible? Message us!

Partner spotlight 🔍

The Trussell Trust

Intelligent Health and the Trussell Trust have launched a twelve-month partnership to help tackle the fast-growing rate of poverty in the UK.

Our new partnership sets into motion with Intelligent Health offering ring-fenced charity funding from our Beat the Street classic programmes. Trussell is an anti-poverty charity, and community of food banks providing practical support to people who can’t afford the essentials, and campaigning for a future where none of us need to use emergency food to get by. They bring together experiences, data, insight and evidence from food banks and the people who need them across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, to gather powerful information on the state of our society and campaign for change. Their research provides the most in-depth picture of who needs a food bank and why, helping them co-create and advocate for solutions. Together with thousands of volunteers and people who have used food banks across the UK, they share what they know to push for the changes that will ensure all of us have enough money to cover the essentials.

The Walking and Cycling Index
