Moving Forward: Exploring New Dimensions in Leadership and Job Satisfaction

Dear Friend,

Nonprofit work presents unique challenges and unparalleled opportunities for deep engagement and substantial personal growth. This edition highlights the importance of organizational benefits in hiring and emphasizes the role of intuition during the hiring process. We are dedicated to guiding you to career paths tailored to your unique skills and commitment to enacting meaningful change within the nonprofit sector.

What Would I Tell My Younger Self?

I will be entering a new decade next year. Looking back, I have learned plenty from colleagues, bosses, and direct reports.

I would tell myself the following:

  1. Give yourself grace. You will make mistakes. Deeply listen to those. They are brilliant learning vehicles. Also, watch others make them. Watch and learn what choices they make next.
  2. Give yourself time. Rome was not built in a day, right? You won't be either. You'll need time to learn, re-learn, un-learn, and learn again. That's ok.
  3. There is a difference between learning something and being something. Do the first before reaching for the second, as the first takes time (see #2 above). Learning something is knowledge for you to receive and share once you've mastered what you are learning. Being something is being in unison with your chosen trade after deeply learning it. That's when you become an artist. You've recognized the artists. That brilliant doctor. That teacher is a whisperer of students and also of what topical area they teach. That one waiter at your favorite restaurant. That HR team member who foresees the shenanigans. That finance team member who can create budgets like a smooth, delicious cheesecake. That administrative assistant who has what you need before you ask them for it.

All this is to remind each of you of your brilliance. Yes, you. You, the very person, are reading this right now. Give yourself grace (1), take time to do all of the learnings (2), and just become (3).

I'm still doing each of these things. Even this newsletter was new, and next week will be the 20th time I've created it. So, yes, I, too, am still becoming.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom to your younger self Marvin. These are great reminders even to our present day selves! I would tell my younger self to remember to take a deep breath (or two) before responding to some one or some thing in the moment.
