Elevating Your Removal Business: Insights from 50+ Years of Experience

As someone who has spent 50+ years in the removal industry, I have seen the industry evolve in ways we never could have imagined. From manual scheduling to digital logistics, and from local moves to global relocations, the landscape has shifted dramatically. However, what remains constant is the need for strong business foundations—understanding costs, managing profit, optimising invoicing, mastering marketing, and pushing forward with business development.

In my new role as a Business Coach with the Business Coach Academy, I’m passionate about sharing my experiences and helping removal companies, big or small, thrive in this ever-changing environment. Whether you're just starting out or looking to scale, there are universal truths that every successful removal business should keep in mind:

1. Know Your Costs Inside Out

Understanding your operational costs is essential. This includes not just direct costs like fuel, labour, and equipment, but also indirect expenses such as insurance, vehicle maintenance, and technology investments. Rising transport costs can eat into profits if not managed properly, so it’s important to constantly assess route efficiency, fuel consumption, and vehicle fleet optimisation.

2. Revenue Doesn’t Equal Profit

Many removal companies fall into the trap of focusing only on revenue. But revenue doesn’t equal profit. To be truly successful, you need to track every expense and continually look for areas to improve efficiency. Small savings on fuel, better route planning, or more efficient use of packing materials can make a big difference to your bottom line over time. Additionally, explore sourcing competitive suppliers to help reduce your operating costs.

 3. Optimise Your Storage Methods

For companies offering storage services, having efficient and secure storage solutions is crucial. Storage methods, such as modular storage containers, can offer flexibility while maximising warehouse space (and height!). Make sure you’re regularly reviewing your storage management systems to ensure they’re cost effective and scalable.

4. Streamline Your Invoicing

Your invoicing process can either enhance or hinder your cash flow. It’s crucial to have clear, prompt, and transparent invoicing. Ensure you are using technology that automates and simplifies this process. Many businesses face unnecessary delays in payment simply because their invoicing system is not efficient.

5. Invest in Staff Training and Retention

Your people are your most valuable asset. Well-trained, motivated staff can be the difference between a smooth move and a stressful one for your clients. Regular staff training not only improves the quality of service but also boosts employee confidence and morale. Offering development opportunities and competitive incentives can significantly improve staff retention, reducing the high costs associated with turnover and constantly retraining new employees. A stable, experienced team builds trust with customers and can become the backbone of your company’s reputation.

6. Work On the Business, Not Just In It

One of the biggest challenges for business owners is getting caught up in the daily grind of operations. To grow, you need to take time to step back and work on the business, not just in it. Regularly assess the state of your business—are your current processes efficient and effective? Are they still the right fit for your business as it evolves? Taking time out to analyse these factors helps you identify areas for improvement, allowing you to make strategic changes rather than getting lost in the day-to-day demands.

 7. Market Like Your Business Depends on It – Because It Does

Whether you’re a small local operator or an international company, marketing is key to your growth. Today, digital marketing offers cost-effective ways to reach potential customers. Use social media, SEO, and targeted ads to position yourself as the go-to removal company in your area. Content marketing—like this very newsletter—is also an excellent way to establish authority and trust within the industry.

8. Focus on Business Development

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations, but consistent business development efforts are what will set you apart. Regularly review your services and identify new market opportunities—whether it’s expanding into corporate relocations, partnering with Estate Agents, or offering specialised moving services. Building strong relationships with competitive suppliers and referral partners can also lead to long-term growth.

9. The Value of a Business Coach

Some lessons I’ve learned the hard way, but these experiences have shaped my understanding of what it takes to build a thriving business.
