How did you find the introduction to your new team and your training?

I had a very lovely introduction to my new team. On my first day I was extremely nervous as I had no prior knowledge in my role and wanted to make a good impression. My team supported me by letting me know that it is okay to be nervous and as an Apprentice that’s why I’m here to learn and develop my skills. This put me at ease and made me more comfortable around my team.

I enjoyed completing my training as the mandatory courses were all ready for me to complete on the software Olive. One of my favourite things about Olive is that the courses are free to employees meaning I can choose how to progress my learning. I appreciate this as it gives me my independence and allows for me to complete courses which interest me.

What are the variety of tasks you carry out in your role? How does this positively impact yourself and others?

Each day is completely different meaning the tasks which I complete will be varied. My days consist of writing emails, making phone calls, attending training sessions, organizing meetings, updating excel spreadsheets and so much more. This was extremely intimidating to me at the start of the apprenticeship as I had no prior experience, however once I was settled into my team, all these tasks were easier to understand as my knowledge was able to develop. Sometimes days can be chaotic, but I was advised this in my interview, I really enjoy this way of working as it allows me to leave my comfort zone, it also makes the day go quicker which is something everyone loves. Leaving my comfort zone was hard but I knew it was needed so I am able to keep progressing in my chosen role.

How has your apprenticeship increased your knowledge and skills?

Before I started this apprenticeship I was working in hospitality, the role required for me to be a lot more physically active I had no time to develop my skills and knowledge. With this apprenticeship I really enjoyed some of the early career workshops as they provided me with new information that helped me get settled into my role. The way my skills have increased is I am a lot more capable in completing tasks on my laptop such as creating spreadsheets to store information, also my telecommunication skills were not the greatest when I started but know I am able to pick up the phone with ease and answer any queries to the best of my ability.

As I work within the adults, wellbeing, and health partnerships directorate my knowledge around this subject has increased like wildfire. At the start I had basic knowledge about adult social care, Now I’m seven months into the apprenticeship I have such great understanding of the terminology used by my team and how queries need to be actioned. From my apprenticeship I have gained so much knowledge such as learning about stakeholders, information governance and one task which I really enjoyed was the pestle analysis. All of this knowledge which has been gained will aid me in utilising my skills to find a career path to head towards.

What are the biggest benefits you have found so far from doing your apprenticeship?

The biggest benefits for me personally are the amount of learning opportunities that are given. This assists me in my work but also helps me improve as a person. Whether it be online or face to face the learning opportunities that are provided with Surrey County Council are exceptional. There are so many courses, that I believe anyone can find something that would interest them. The reason this is such a benefit to me is as it allows for me to independently be in charge of my learning, allowing for me to explore my interests. Another benefit which I find extremely useful is the opportunities to shadow other departments. This is an excellent benefit as it allows for me to get a better understanding of different roles and to increase my skill set which can be brought back to my team. These shadowing opportunities allow me to see more of the Council and decide whether this is the way forward for my career.

When I started my apprenticeship, I was extremely afraid, but I was really lucky to have such an amazing team who are supportive, attentive and care about me. Their support system is what allowed me to flourish into a contributing member of the team. With apprenticeships it can be really difficult to settle as you are studying and working at the same time. My personal advice would be to give yourself time to adjust to your new surroundings and not to be judgemental of yourself as with time the skills and knowledge will embed, then your confidence will grow, and you will be able to perform your role to the best of your ability.
