My Charity Place for the 2020 London Marathon
My story starts 3 years ago in the April when I was watching the highlights of the London Marathon with my wife. We got into a discussion about running the London Marathon and she stated quite rightly that I was not too old to run the London Marathon if I wanted to at the age of 53.
The following week when the ballot opened, I applied. I very brightly announced to my wife what I had done, feeling pleased with myself.
My wife being very practical informed me when I came home from work on the Tuesday evening from work that she had been on Facebook and found a running club in the village and that I needed to meet them at the Scout hut at 7p.m. stating that if I planned to run the London Marathon then perhaps I should do some running, I guess she had a valid point.
So, I quickly found a pair of trainers, tracksuit bottoms along with a T-shit and a hoodie and set off down the Scout Hut, where I met the small, but friendly group of runners. I was informed that we would only do a short run up the lane at my pace as I was new.
I was delighted with myself having kept up and completed my first run, however the following morning I could barely put one foot in front of another. I now know that first run was 5k.
Each year since I have applied, unsuccessfully, for the London Marathon while taking part in a number of races over the last 3 years. Last year I finished my first half marathon in just under 2 hours and earlier this year I completed the Colchester zoo 10k Stampede in just under 55 minutes, another personal best.
I was delighted when I got the call telling me that I at last had a place to run in the London Marathon and considered myself privileged to be part of the Sense raising money for a worthy cause.
Please give what you can to support me in this endeavour.
